The third installment of the 2013 Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on February 18th, 2014. Payments made after February 18th, 2014 will have an additional 1% interest added to the unpaid balance.
The utility billing is also due on February 18th, 2014. Payments made after February 18th, 2014 will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty added to the unpaid balance.
The Paid Sick Day (H.208) legislation that would require all employers to permit employees to earn up to five paid sick days per year has passed it’s first major hurdle. It was voted out of its first committee appearance (Housing and Military Affairs, and don’t ask me why there) by a strong 6-1 margin. It has now moved to the House Appropriations Committee.
A few weeks ago, January 28th, four Vt House legislators introduced a bill to hinder information gathering in Vermont.
There are four sponsors from four perspectives: Rep Davis-Hatch Progressive from the NE Kingdom, Rep Zagar, Dem from Windsor, Rep Komline, Repub from Rutland and W. Stevens, Ind. from Addison. The bill’s number is H.732. It will not have time to get through this session and will have to be re-introduced next year (the slate is wiped clean at the end of every biennium) if the sponsors or others choose. In observance of President’s Day, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2014, with the exception of emergency services.
Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, February 16 and February 17. All other violations, including extended parking will be enforced.
Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Sunday, February 16 and Monday, February 17, 2014.

On Thursday, February 13, 6:00-7:30 pm, the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will hold its monthly meeting at The New England House, 254 Marlboro Road. Michael Bosworth, president of the Association, will share discussion by the trustees at a meeting in January as to plans for the WBA this year. There will also be a report of the treasury.
The group will have a quick review of the various projects undertaken by the WBA including traffic safety, the Neighborhoods Project, signage, police/fire facilities, and the status of Brattleboro West Arts and West Brattleboro Partners efforts.

Interstate 91 Southbound between Exits 2 and 3 and the Exit 3 on ramps have been reopened.

Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project
A southbound tractor trailer truck slid off interstate 91. In order to remove the truck, 191 southbound between exits 2 and 3 will be closed for several hours. Southbound traffic will be diverted off I91 at Exit 3, and the on ramps at Exit 3 in both directions will also be closed.
I will send another notice when the closures are lifted.
The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 7:30am in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center.

I-91
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge in the Fall of 2015.
Weather permitting, night work will be conducted Sunday night, February 9th through Friday night, February 14th.
Route 30
The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through 2016.
Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.
Please help spread the word. The film showing of “High Power” tonight is cancelled as the film maker is stranded up north. It was scheduled for 7pm at the Brattleboro Food Coop Community Room.

Plans for the new police and fire facilities were presented to the Brattleboro Selectboard at their first Tuesday meeting in February. The plans were detailed and raised few comments from the board or the public.
Brattleboro businesses face new fines and possible court dates. That’s the word from the Selectboard regarding those who fail to pay for a Brattleboro business license.
The Selectboard held a discussion of evaluating the necessity of positions if staff retire, provoking minor protest from department heads who felt the budget process allows the board an opportunity for just that. The board disagreed.

Yield at Crosswalks
Motorists, yield to pedestrians in all crosswalks, even at mid-block crosswalks. When downtown, stop for pedestrians who are waiting to cross. Pay particular attention to the crosswalk in front of the Post Office/Rec. Department.
In other town crosswalks, stop for pedestrians if they are already in the crosswalk. Do not drive through the crosswalk if a pedestrian is crossing in it, even if they are on the far side of the lane from you.
I was down at the Town Clerk’s office today doing some research. While I was there, someone called asking how to get in touch with iBrattleboro, so they put me on the phone. He said he didn’t have a computer but wanted to warn people about another phone scam.
He said that the scam goes like this. You cell phone will ring once. If you get curious and call it back, you get charged $20, plus another $9 a minute for as long as you stay on the phone.
So, be warned.
Part of my research involved looking at Selectboard minutes from the 1950’s and I got to pass over many unrelated but interesting things we don’t hear much about today (and some things we still hear about).
