CHESTER/SAXTONS, CLAREMONT, NEWPORT AND SUNAPEE WINNERS IN CRVBL WEEK 2

There’s now a three-way tie atop the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League after the Chester/Saxtons River Crush, the Claremont Cardinals, Newport Polar Bears and Sunapee Old Lakers were winners in the season’s second week of town team action.

Chester/Saxtons River started off the weekend with a 5 – 1 victory over the Walpole Wild Blue at the baseball complex in Walpole. Nick Wirkkala of the Crush went six innings on the mound, giving up just three hits and striking out seven. He was also 1 for three at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Scott Renfro went 3 for 4 with an RBI double, Toby Miller also went 3 for 4 scoring two runs and Jamie Spence had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

The Claremont Cardinals, Chester Crush, Walpole Wild Blue and the Newport Polar Bears all notched wins as the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League opened its 12th season of play last weekend.

Claremont began its defense of the 2012 CRVBL title with a 16 – 6 win over the Putney Fossils at Barnes Park in Claremont. The first six Cardinal batters reached base and Gerry Thompson knocked in two runs with a bases loaded single. Claremont’s Nate Duford hit a homer, a triple and drove in three runs while teammate Bob Myers had three hits and scored four runs. Colby-Sawyer College alum Jon Nicholas picked up his first win for Claremont. Richard Bissell took the loss for Putney but on offense had a base hit and scored a run.

The Connecticut River Valley Baseball League resumes the tradition of New England Town Team adult baseball on Sunday, April 21 when it begins its 12th season at four local ballparks.  All eight of the League’s teams are in action on Opening Day, with three New Hampshire teams hosting clubs from Vermont, and one all-New Hampshire game.
 
The games, all of which are free to the public, begin at 11 a.m. when the defending CRVBL champion Claremont Cardinals host the Putney Fossils at Barnes Park; the Keene Black Dawgs entertain the Chester Crush at Marlborough Field in Marlborough, and the league’s newest entry, the Sunapee Old Lakers, play host to the Newport Polar Bears.
 

Reports are coming out about a pair of explosions rocking the finish line area of the Boston Marathon. We’ll have to wait to know more of what happened.

When I was a kid, we happened to be visiting in Boston the day of the Marathon. It was easy to get near the finish line and watch the runners cross it.

There is still room for a team to join summer soccer in Brattleboro this year, sponsored by the Putney Soccer Club and held on Wednesday evenings at SIT. Eleven teams are not in place and there is room for one more. The season starts on May 1 and runs to the end of August.

All donations for this year’s Plunge go to benefit Living Memorial Park Snow Sports! The lift cable MUST be replaced in order to open next year ($10,000+). The groomer is in need of repairs or replacement (30+ years old). A maintenance/storage building is needed to house and repair equipment including, the groomer, T-bars, spring-boxes, snow making equipment, terrain park features, and other items. 

The ski/snowboard lift at Living Memorial Park here in Brattleboro still has plenty of snow. The lift will run today 3-9, Saturday 10-4, and Sunday 12-4.

Even with a chill in the air and snow on the ground, members of the Brattleboro River Rats baseball team have been working out in preparation for the start of the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League Season next month. Brattleboro’s only adult baseball team is also looking for a few players to fill some open spots on the squad

Teams sought for BOWL FOR KIDS’ SAKE benefit April 6

Brattleboro, VT–Families, friends and teams from work are invited to celebrate the 32nd Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake to benefit Youth Services’ Big Brothers Big Sisters program on Saturday, April 6. The fundraising event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with teams signing up for a one-hour time slot at Brattleboro Bowl on Putney Road.

The 4-5 p.m. time is reserved for teams of teens and will have a special “Cosmic Bowling” atmosphere. The financial goal of the event is to raise $50,000 in pledge money to help cover the cost of running the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
