For the last week or so, Agway on Putney Road has been having its seasonal sale of young chickens and ducks. There are five or so big bins filled with chicks, ducklings, and even a gosling or two, I think. They have some lamps to keep them warm, and food and water.

Ask for help and they’ll get a box and put your little feathered friends in it for you and you can be on your way. 

On your way to what? When we were young, parents got us some duckings to raise. They started out indoors but quickly became backyard friends.

Soon, Brattleboro will be joining Toronto, Canada, Clearwater, FL, and San Diego, CA as well as many other towns, by posting signs in public parking lots that remind the public of the dangers of how hot a car can quickly get, even on a mild day. In Brattleboro, they will be smaller stickers, strategically positioned near the coin slots on the town parking kiosks in all parking lots and garages. This effort can save lives and reduce the possibility of tragic animal suffering.

This is a story I submitted to iBrattleboro a couple years ago and it got a thousand or so views which is pretty good. And since the cat in question, Friskey, is turning 14 today, i thought it might be appropriate to resubmit it

When we got Friskey from the Windham County Humane Society as a 3 month old back in July of ’99, she was to be an indoor cat.

Cats who go out live an average of 4 years; cats who stay in live 16. Not much wiggle room for debate there.

Brattleboro dog and wolf-hybrid licenses are due on or before April 1. Vermont dogs and wolf-hybrids 6 months of age and older must be licensed on or before April 1. For dogs not previously licensed in Brattleboro, a first-time license must be obtained in person from the Town Clerk’s office. Licenses being renewed may be processed in the Town Clerk’s office, through the mail or online at www.brattleboro.org.

Anyone know if there are any upcoming rabies clinics in Brattleboro? There usually are this time of year, but so far the only one I’ve heard about is in Wilmington.

RedRover, the Sacramento, CA based animal welfare and rights advocacy organization with an international scope, is ramping up their My Dog is Cool Campaign before the summer months arrive and dog safety in cars becomes more urgent. As part of their information resources development, they have compiled a media reports data base, as actual incidents of dogs suffering, dying or requiring euthanasia after being left in hot cars are believed to go often unreported, making accurate data collection problematic.

If you look in the right sidebar in the Pets section, you’ll see that we’re now featuring pets available for adoption from the Windham County Humane Society.

It used to be that we could only show pets from all of Vermont. It’s great to now be able to feature local pets that need homes.

The box will load a pair of random pets from the available pet list maintained by WCHS.
