A Tempo Senior Move Slates Activities for May: “Older Americans’ Month”

Originally decreed by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 as Senior Citizens’ Month, and now known as Older Americans’ Month, May is a good time to think about services offered in New England by A Tempo Senior Move. Offering advice and services related to the changes often experienced by retirees and seniors as they get older, A Tempo Senior Move is participating in a number of events scheduled for the month throughout the region, including a recent clinical workshop at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis presented by Christina Healy, RN, MA, and Dr. Marjorie Kettell. Healy is a geri-psych clinician and psychoanalyst on staff of A Tempo Senior Move.

Christina Gibbons, PhD, of Brattleboro, an independent scholar interested in the history of literacy, fills the glass display cases with her images of reading in postcards collection in the second-floor entryway during May. 

“I started collecting images of women reading twenty five years ago and now have several hundred. The original post cards were first exhibited in the library at UMass Amherst in 2001. After that I began lecturing and quickly realized my collection was not about painting but about the history of literacy, so I added men reading and writing as well.”

Ready for your weekend concert? Here’s one you are either going to love or hate.

There isn’t much middle ground with Dread Zeppelin. You either enjoy an Elvis impersonator singing Zeppelin songs with a reggae twist, or you do not.

I do. This band cracks me up. To my ear they do excellent, inventive cover songs with the right mix of love and parody. Mixing Heartbreaker with Heartbreak Hotel is genius.

Putney, VT — Marking Armed Forces Day, the highly acclaimed film “SERVICE: When Women Come Marching Home” (http://servicethefilm.com/) will be shown on Saturday, May 18th at 7:00 p.m. at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill, in Putney, Vt.

The film portrays the courage of several women veterans as they transition from active duty to civilian life, following them as they overcome psychological trauma, severe physical injury, military sexual assault and the challenge of receiving care and benefits.

Vermont’s constitution, drafted in 1777, was one of the most enlightened documents of its time, but in contrast, the history of Vermont has largely been told through the stories of influential white men. Join local scholar Cyndy Bittinger at the Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, May 8, at 7 PM on a journey through the forgotten tales of the often overlooked roles that women, Native Americans, and African Americans played in Vermont’s history.

Her book, Vermont Women, Native Americans, and African Americans, takes a fresh look at our state’s history, uncovering hidden stories from the earliest inhabitants to present-day citizens. Ms. Bittinger explores where these marginalized groups are missing from historical narratives and explains their unique experiences and the ways that they contributed.

On Exhibit: Saxtons River Art Guild

Members of the Saxtons River Art Guild will be exhibiting original paintings at the Brooks Memorial Library beginning Tuesday, April 30 until Tuesday, May 28. Included will be original paintings in watercolor, oil, and pastels.

The Saxtons River Art Guild was formed in Saxtons River, Vermont in 1976 by a small group of artists who enjoyed painting together. Membership has grown from a dozen or so to over 70 artists and others interested in the fine arts. Members come from throughout the southern Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Weekend Concert Series – Trouble Funk in Japan

It’s February 1988 and we’ve travelled to Japan with Trouble Funk.

Trouble Funk was a DC Go Go band that was attempting to break out of DC and bring the go go sound – a mixture of funk, jazz, and latin grooves – to a wider audience. They had some success in England and in Japan, but by touring the world they lost touch with their local fans.

I love Trouble Funk. If I had a time machine, I’d go back to see them again. I love the driving percussion and call and response with the audience, the horn section, the meaty keyboards and bass, and touch of rock guitar.

Have you not heard the lament of our resident philosopher, Spinoza? The call to action from our resident documentarian, Chris Pratt? Is this site created by Chris Grotke and Lise LePage as much for the future as it is for the past and present?

What is it about the future we seem to fear so much? Will we all end by “dining on ashes” paralyzed like lumps of coal on a fire?

We have to start somewhere.

BSD Spring Dance Tickets Go On Sale May 9

Tickets go on sale Thursday, May 9 for the Brattleboro School of Dance annual spring recital. Performances take place the weekends of May 17-19 and May 24-26 at the New England Youth Theatre, located at 100 Flat Street in downtown Brattleboro.

Current dance students and alumni will perform in 14 pieces choreographed by faculty and guests of the school, demonstrating a breadth of styles that include ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop and belly dancing.

The recital’s 2013 theme, “Evolution,” reflects the progression of several pieces in the program over the course of different shows, says BSD director Jennifer Moyse, as well as the generational transition within the school’s community since it was founded by Kathleen Keller in 1976.

The poetry of Robert Frost and William Wordsworth depends heavily on the natural world and the “language really used by men.” Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea explores the poets’ similarities, differences, and influence on other poets.

The lecture is a First Wednesday program sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. Supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Vermont Department of Libraries.
