Twilight Music continues its 11th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 28 with southern Vermont based funk and world beat band Simba. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25. All concerts begin at 5:30 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Putney Food Co-Op, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Inn, Next Stage Arts Project, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.
Irish-American folk music duo Young Ireland presents a musical celebration of Irish history and tradition at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Sunday, July 28 at 7:00 pm. All ages are welcome to share this evening of inspiring, original songs and storytelling. Partial proceeds from the concert benefit Brattleboro Area Hospice.
It seemed not so long ago a terrarium was a common sight in a home. Also fish tanks, turtle boxes, even freeze-dried sea-horses that you sent away for were trafficked more heavily in the pre-computer age. Little patches of life, microcosms and personal plots and spaces. Handheld domains sustained by the attention we brought to them.
We now cultivate social globes. We tend our Digitariums populated by “friends and followers”, and fed by our crafted personas. We spend swaths of time in prescribed webspheres made of input boxes, upload buttons, and php scripts. These are technically vivariums too, miniature worlds, but the contents of the bowl are linguistic and iconic rather than purely organic.
This concert is from the tour that nearly bankrupted the band and all but ended ELP.
In 1975, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer were starting to get itchy. Their 4 previous albums had made the musical statements they’d wanted to make and each member wanted to do something new. They each had also been working on their own music apart from the band. Eventually, rather than make solo albums, they made the “Works” albums. In Volume I each member took one side of the 2- record album and they all collaborated on the 4th side. “Works Volume I” wasn’t received well by the fan base from its release date of St. Patrick’s Day,1977. Unlike anything they’d done before, it was the beginning of the end. I like to think it was just the band growing up, as they were all about 30 years old at this point. But my love of the album wasn’t the opinion of the majority of fans.
Brattleboro no longer prints newspapers.
Neither the Commons nor the Reformer prints their papers in Brattleboro. I found this out after a reader asked if any papers were printed in town and I asked a few questions.
For over a century The Reformer and many other papers were printed in Brattleboro. With active news and book presses running around the clock, Brattleboro was a printing town.
The Apron Theater Company and Next Stage Arts present The Cripple of Inishmaan, directed by Karla Baldwin. The play opens Thursday, August 8th at Next Stage, 15 Kimball Hill, Putney and will run through Sunday, August 11th, and Thursday, August 15th through Saturday, August 17th. Trees threatening to crash down? Too much thunder and lightning?
I decided to calm my nerves by investing in a little paint.
I got out my ladder (July 21, 2013) so I could reach the top of the 8 foot high arch created by a the first section of a long tree branch about 40 feet long that suddenly fell (July 17, 2013) about 15 feet from where I was standing in my garden.

As I said once before, Steve Winwood’s music and voice is the sound of Summer to me. With this heat wave we need some cool vibes.
This concert is from the Soundstage series jointly produced by the PBS station in Chicago, WTTW, and HD Ready. Original broadcast date: Sept. 2004.
Steve Winwood was precocious and is often called a prodigy. Born in Birmingham, England to a working class family with musical talents, he learned drums, guitar and piano from toddler age and began performing publicly with his father and older brother Muff at age 8. In the following six years, he backed B.B. King, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters on their U.K. tours, and often did session work.
The film Northern Borders which was produced and directed by Jay Craven will be screened at several venues next week. Jay Craven a Vermont filmmaker and professor at Marlboro has been traveling with the film as well.
The film will screened July 21st at 7:30pm at Next Stage in Putney, July 22nd in Townsend, (I forgot where), in Marlboro on the 23rd, and in Guilford on the 24th at the Broad Brook Grange. All shows are at 7:30, addresses of each venue can be found by googling Northen Borders film tour.
The film which premeired in Brattleboro last April used some actors from Brattleboro and was filmed on a farm there as well. I hope lots of people will show up to support Jay Craven and the others who made this film possible.

Springfield, Vt., and 13 neighboring towns – Saxons River, Chester, North Springfield, Grafton, Bridgewater, Cuttingsville, Wallingford, Hartland, Killington, Pawlet, Danby, Mt. Holly and Middletown Springs – are in the process of getting state-of-the-art Internet access at speeds 100 times faster than average and faster than anywhere else in the United States except a Kansas City, Mo., pilot project by Google.
