Sandglass Theater’s Puppets in Paradise is This Weekend!

On Saturday and Sunday, September 7 and 8 from 10am-4pm, Sandglass Theater announces the return of local favorite, Puppets in Paradise, a two-day extravaganza of performance, food, and community. “Paradise” is the enchanted setting of landscape architects Gordon and Mary Hayward’s gardens. Walk the gardens, take in the colors and smells of lush herbs, flowers, and other beautiful flora as you meet puppets, theater artists and musicians around each corner and behind every bush. The “Puppets” are 10 spectacular and entertaining short performances presented throughout the day among the flora. Food and refreshments add to the delight of a beautiful day.

Filmmaker Ken Burns to Appear at Latchis Theatre’s Grand Re-Opening October 19, 7:30 p.m.

Join renowned documentarian and filmmaker Ken Burns for the Grand Re-Opening of the Latchis Theatre following two and a half months of renovation and restoration in the historic auditorium.

Long-time friend of the Latchis Theatre, Ken Burns will preview an entire episode of The Roosevelts: An Intimate History Episode 5 1933-1939  “The Rising Road” which focuses on the late 1930’s (same as the Latchis!).  He will introduce the segment and answer questions afterwards.

This is a world premiere, as the series won’t be released until 2014.

FOMAG Sunday Outdoor Orchestra Concert Will Be Outdoors

Today’s outdoor orchestra concert will take place as intended on the lawn at the Guilford Organ Barn!

Bring your umbrellas, raincoats, and waterproof grass-sitting gear, but so far things are looking good…we will monitor Dopple Radar all afternoon to be prepared if any significant precipitation approaches.

Lunch starts serving at noon, music at 2, follow signs from Guilford Country Store and allow 30 minutes to get to the barn from Brattleboro.  Directions may also be found at www.fomag.org

Weekend Concert Series- Cyndi Lauper- Jazzaldia, San Sebastien, Spain, 2011

A few months back I posted the . That concert was Cyndi at her height of popularity from her first album “She’s So Unusual”, when she was young and full of frenetic energy. This concert is from the tour for her 11th album, “Memphis Blues”, and shows her as an older, accomplished musician. Lauper’s voice has lost none of its range and if possible is even more remarkable at nearly 60. 

The album and tour celebrated her lifelong love of the blues. Lauper sings many of her hits along with these, most rearranged to showcase her unique talents. I’ll leave the surprises for you to find. 

Yankee, What Next?

When Yankee powers down, it will have to be “decommissioned”. However, that process only applies to those structures and appurtenances that were actually involved in nuclear production or otherwise affected. There are numerous other buildings that can remain. They should be put to useful service.

The spent fuel, of course, must be dealt with in an urgent manner. In reality, nothing useful can be developed there while the fuel remains.

One of the biggest assets at the site is the 345,000 volt transmission line network extending North, South and East. Although not owned by Yankee, it is located there and has been significantly upgraded recently. Any new development needs to take this into consideration.

The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library is sponsoring a concert to fund the public access computing and lifelong learning programs of the library. 

Chris Bakriges, an internationally recognized jazz pianist living in Southern Vermont, is volunteering his talents again to create a special evening of  instrumental pieces from the Great American Songbook–the most popular and enduring popular songs from the 1920’s to 1950’s–on September 21, starting at 7 PM, in the American Legion Hall in Brattleboro. 

1791 Bullock House in Guilford Open to Visitors Sept. 7

1791 House Restored and Open to Tour in Guilford, Saturday Sept. 7, 1-3 pm

About five years ago the 1791 Bullock-Ashworth House on Ashworth Road was purchased by Sara Coffey and her husband David Snyder for the purpose of housing visiting artists who are working at the recording studios of Guilford Sound and Vermont Performance Lab (VPL). The public is invited to tour the house on Sept. 7 from 1 to 3 pm to see what has been accomplished.

1975 a Day in the Life…110 Llandaff

YEP PRODUCTIONS is presenting 110 LANDAFF. A short film being shot in Brattleboro on September 9th with David Koechner (The Office and Anchor Man) and Paula Pel (Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock) playing the parents of Mary Jo Parker played by Cassandra Dunn. The supporting cast is made up of 18 New England Youth Theatre actors.

Many workers who deserve to be honored on this special day have come from across the border. In a global economy, workers who strive for justice in their own country must, by necessity, unite with workers around the world.
