The Second Annual T. P. James Write Like the Dickens Faux Seance and Real Writing Contest

In 1873, T. P. James persuaded many people that he was the “spirit pen” of Charles Dicken’s ghost. If you believed him, or if you were just curious, he would be glad to sell you a copy of his book.

As part of the Brattleboro Literary Festival, contestants will gather at the Brooks Memorial Library meeting room on Oct 4, at 10 AM. The room will be refitted as a seance parlor. The Seance could be described as “faux”, but we are looking for serious attempts to complete his novel,”The Life and Adventures of Bockley Wickleheap” one chapter at a time.

We’ve featured them before, but why not take another look at the Talking Heads? Here they are performing at Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin Texas on September 15, 1979.

Fear of Music was the 1979 album from the band, their second with Brain Eno and third overall. It was released in August, just prior to this show.

The mail has come in rather unexpectedly, and will soon go out again. The mail that has arrived has not been distributed, so I know not whether there are any letters from you or not. I got one Thursday. I have nothing new to write.

Guilford to Celebrate Dylan Thomas Centenary

October 2014 marks the centenary of Welsh author Dylan Thomas, known to an unusually wide audience for a poet, this despite his early death at age 39.  

The town of Guilford  will host three commemorative Dylan Thomas events, each sponsored by a different non-profit organization, in October and December.  Guilford is known for its unique celebrations, such as our year-long 250th Town anniversary in 2011, so a few of us got the idea that if anyone was going to present this commemoration it would probably be our town.

Paul Winter Consort To Perform “In Celebration of the Earth” at Latchis Theatre

A benefit concert by the Paul Winter Consort will be held at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro, Vermont, on October 25 at 7:30 p.m.

The performance, a fundraiser for the Guilford Community Church’s green-up efforts, will highlight soloists Paul Winter, Eugene Friesen, and Theresa Thomason, three Grammy Award-winning and internationally recognized performers, in addition to Todd Roach on percussion and Jeff Holmes on piano. The Greater Brattleboro Choir of the Community, under the direction of Peter Amidon, will join the Consort on stage to perform several songs, including ones made famous by folksinger Pete Seeger.

1860: The Little Fairy, Dollie Dutton

1860: The little fairy, Dollie Dutton, finished her series of entertainments to the inhabitants of Brattleboro in the Town Hall on Monday evening. While she herself os but nine years old, measuring 29 inches in height and weighing 15 pounds, she was assisted and sustained by two other persons, upon whose births the reverse ends of a powerful magnifying glass had seemed to smile in respective proportions.

Dearest Abiah,

Went on picket Monday. Left a letter to be sent out that night, as there was a man going out, but came in and still find it here. It was not sent by some mistake, so now will let it go for what it is worth, and give you a new addition. We see no signs of moving, but we never know what the day may bring forth. We went on picket Monday, as I said before. On Tuesday our division were taken out on a scout towards Winchester. They went out about five miles and came back at some time in the night between 10 and 11.

The evening begins with a Louisiana gumbo supper, prepared by Sandglass’s Board of Directors, under the tutelage of Scott Ainslie, local blues master and bayou cook! “The recipe is Scott’s own, learned first hand from master gumbo cooks in Louisiana. Scott is taking us step by step through the fixing, right from making the roux. It’s authentic, and made without okra” says Eric Bass, Co-Artistic Director of Sandglass Theater.

Dearest Abiah,-

Here we are yet, only our regiment has been moved down nearer the river and are doing picket duty by themselves. Came here Saturday. Saw Zopher just before we came; the same morning.

Perhaps it will do to talk a little about that commission. I have not wanted to say much about it heretofore, but it is probably not very far off. I received a note from Major Foster’s office with regard to the chances of three of us. James Tinkham Capt. There were then ten that preceded him and 21 ahead of me and W. S. Myers he was second Lieut. There were 43 preceding him.

Patti Kerr: Alzheimer’s Author & Educator To Speak At Brooks Memorial Library Sept 10 at 2 PM & 7 PM

Alzheimer’s educator and author Patti Kerr will speak at the Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, September 10th at 2 PM in the Library’s Meeting Room on the 2nd Floor. She will also repeat her talk at 7 PM. Kerr, a Certified Alzheimer’s Educator, is also author of  “I Love You…Who Are You?”, Loving and Caring for a Parent with Alzheimer’s”.

She will discuss Alzheimer’s, her family’s journey with the disease, and how to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. She will also provide information and hands-on tips for everyone regarding the disease.
