Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Free Concert Series – The Gaslight Tinkers on Sunday, July 1

Twilight Music continues its 16th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk rock, world beat, rock, country, pop, Celtic, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 1 with The Gaslight Tinkers.  The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 26.  All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain.  The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Green Mountain Well, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney area businesses and organizations.  The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.  For more information, call 802-387-5772 or visit www.twilightmusic.org.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project

The Vermont Jazz Center presents Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project on June 9th at 8:00 PM.  The Director of the VJC, Uman and uses the Convergence Project as vehicle to present his original compositions and music that has influenced him – it includes Wanda Houston (vocals), Michael Zsoldos, saxophones; Jeff Galindo, trombone; Uman, piano; David Picchi, bass (electric and acoustic) and Jon Fisher on drums. There will also be surprise musical guests performing at this event.

After many musically formative years in Colombia, South America, Uman became drawn to blending the many rhythms of the country, such as cumbia, bambuco and pasillo, with jazz harmonies. While living in Antioquia, the Big Band of Medellín commissioned Uman to write for their 20-piece orchestra, resulting in Blues para Urabá. 

A Cappella à la Carte on June 8: Supper and Songs

Guilford, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG) presents its 52nd season finale on Friday, June 8, an annual three-part event dubbed “A Cappella à la Carte.” Set at two neighboring churches in the Algiers village of Guilford, just over a mile south of Exit 1 off I-91, the evening’s menu includes a short meeting, a potluck picnic, and a 7:30 concert of vocal music. Each optional segment is open to the general public; admission to the concert is by donation.

Beginning at 6 p.m. in Christ Church, at the corner of Melendy Hill Rd. and Rt. 5 south, the FOMAG Annual Membership Meeting is typically short and entertaining, and offers a summary of the year, a look ahead to next season, and election of the board of trustees.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present contemporary folk and pop singer/songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Seth Glier and Matt Nakoa at Next Stage on Friday, June 8 at 7:30 pm.

Singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist, producer and Grammy nominee Seth Glier is renowned for his fearless vocal delivery, musical exuberance and seasoned songwriting beyond his years.  A troubadour in every sense of the word who averages over 150 live performances annually, 29 year-old Glier has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals.  He’s shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar.

John Gorka at Next Stage on Sunday, May 20

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present contemporary folk singer/songwriter John Gorka at Next Stage on Sunday, May 20 at 7:30 pm.  The concert celebrates the release of John’s brand new CD “True in Time.”

John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer/songwriter of the 1980’s folk scene.  Hailing from New Jersey, he honed his craft and persona as a shy, wry and insightful singer/songwriter in the Greenwich Village “Fast Folk”  and Boston music scenes.  Gorka got his start at Godfrey Daniels, a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania, which is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions in the country.

May 27: “Mostly Baroque” Organ Barn Concert

Guilford, Vt. — Friends of Music at Guilford’s 10th annual Spring Organ Recital is set for 3:00 in the afternoon on Sunday, May 27, in the barn at Tree Frog Farm, off Packer Corners Rd. in idyllic rural Guilford. The c. 1897 Tracker Organ was moved from Maine by FOMAG founder A. Graham Down (1929-2014), who invested in its restoration and improvements over the years, and performed the first concerts on it beginning in 1966.

By tradition, each FOMAG season opens with a concert in the barn on Labor Day Weekend, and for the past decade this May event has offered a second annual opportunity to celebrate the organization’s roots. This year’s featured performer is David Neiweem, college organist and carillonneur at the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he teaches vocal studies, conducting, and music education, and is director of choirs. He is also music director at the First Congregational Church of Burlington and director of Vermont’s Aurora Chamber Singers.

Mike Donovan plays a solo show with openers History Teaches (featuring members of Magik Markers & Sunburned Hand of The Man) at Stage 33 Live in Bellows Falls on Monday, May 14.

History Teaches member Ron Schneiderman of Brattleboro has been a formative influence on the psychedelia of the New Weird America non-genre and its offshoots. In addition to his own music, he’s run specialty labels and distribution, and co-organized the Brattleboro Free Folk Festival with Matt Valentine in the early 2000s.

Cantrip and Lindsay Straw at Next Stage on Saturday, April 21

PUTNEY –  Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of traditional and contemporary Celtic music featuring high energy bagpipes/fiddle/guitar trio Cantrip and folksinger/multi-instrumentalist Lindsay Straw at Next Stage on Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 pm.  The concert celebrates Cantrip’s 20th anniversary, with the band performing a mix of brand new music, as well as their entire 2001 album “Silver.”

From the strong base of its Celtic roots, Cantrip branches out into the music of other European cultures.  Weaving together songs and tunes, Dan Houghton, Jon Bews and Eric McDonald take an audience on a cultural journey, putting their own spin on each style.  Known for their innovative arrangements, un-produced sound and dry wit, Cantrip has toured throughout Scotland and the US, expanding the boundaries of Celtic music along the way.

West Brattleboro, Vt. — Friends of Music at Guilford, now in its 52nd concert season, is presenting its 9th annual Women in Music house concert gala on Saturday, April 21. This season’s celebration toasts three noted British composers with diverse and distinguished personal histories: Madeleine Dring, Dame Ethel Smyth, and Lucy Broadwood.

The event, which is held this year in an award-winning energy-efficient home in West Brattleboro, begins at 6:00 p.m. with a festive buffet of hearty hors d’oeuvres, salads, and side dishes, continues with the concert at about 7:00, and concludes with a reception of dessert specialties donated by area inns, bakeries, restaurants, and private chefs.

Wayward Home Folk Musical Comes To Main Street Arts

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – The story of how a flood affects a family is told through the eyes of three storytellers in the musical “Wayward Home,” which will be performed at Main Street Arts Friday and Saturday, Apr. 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m.

With themes that are described as “mythic, with a lot of magic and hyper-theatricality,” the two-act piece has some 20 original musical numbers, with the performers accompanying themselves on piano, guitar and banjo and moving from musician to storyteller as they tell their characters’ stories in a folksy style.

Two Vocal Quartets in Benefit Concert for Women’s Chorus

On Friday, April 6 at 7:30 pm in the Centre Congregational Church parlor, a benefit concert for the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus will be performed by two local-area vocal quartets, the Seymour Sisters and Singcrony.

The Seymour Sisters are Betsy Williams, Laura Williams, Beth Spicer, and Kate Wolff, who sing old-time, gospel, country and swing, as well as play a combination of banjo, mandolin, guitar, dobro and stand-up bass.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of acoustic/electric Americana music from Sleepy Hollow, NY by The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (aka The Grand Slambovians) at Next Stage on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 pm.

The music of The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been described as “hillbilly-Floyd,” “folk-pop,” “alt-country, roots-rock” and “surreal Americana” – a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness. A rootsy psychedelica that Maverick Magazine calls “Mightily impressive and hugely original rock from the cool end of Americana,” the quartet’s melodic avant-folk conjures with an exotic instrumental arsenal (accordion, cello, mandolin, theremin) in addition to standard rock regalia, and a palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Dancing freely between all existing religious and philosophical mythologies, the music is uplifting, empowering and a lot of fun.

Eastes, Spencer, Keelan in Concert at Main Street Arts

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – Main Street Arts concludes this year’s Hands-on music series with a concert Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m.

Three Quirky Composers; Beethoven, Hayden and Dvorak features Zon Eastes on cello, Peggy Spencer on violin and Hugh Keelan at the piano.

Keelan has conducted orchestras throughout the world and is currently the conductor of the Windham Orchestra. He has collaborated with the great artists of our times, including Solti, Haitink, Sir Colin Davis, Shura Cherkassky, Maurice Sendak and Tom Stoppard.
