David Blume started his ecological training young. He and his father Jerry grew almost all the food their family ate, organically on a city lot in San Francisco in the mid-’60s!

Dave taught his first ecology class in 1970. After majoring in Ecological Biology and Biosystematics at San Francisco State University, he worked on experimental projects, first for NASA, and then as a member of the Mother Earth News Eco Village alternative building and alternative energy teams.

Dinner and Hot Latin Jazz at Compass School Saturday Feb. 27th

On Saturday, Feb. 27th, Compass School will host a Latin American-inspired dinner and a musical performance by Eugene and Julian’s Latin Party Band featuring renowned musicians Eugene Uman and Julian Gerstin.
The evening begins at 6:00 p.m with a fabulous, multi-course dinner, and concurrently there will be a silent auction which will include gift certificates to area businesses, fine arts, furniture, clothing, and much more. All-inclusive tickets for dinner and music are just $18 adults and $12 students – a fun and very affordable night out.

On Friday night, Feb. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m., Strolling of the Heifers presents Cabin Fever — a festive food and drink tasting event to kick off weekend.

Taking place at the River Garden in downtown Brattleboro, Cabin Fever will offer a warm atmosphere where people ample specialty foods, fine spirits, wines, and craft brews.

Live music will be provided by Kevin Schnell and , a band from Northampton, MA, playing hard-driving bluegrass, old time country, classic rock, and more with hot licks and sweet harmonies!

The Stroll’s art gallery, Gallery at the Garden, will be open, featuring an exhibit of oil and watercolor paintings by Crystal Bartlett, and acrylics by Steven Meyer.

Next Stage Arts Project will honor the late David Bowie on Friday, February 5, showing ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDER FROM MARS (1973), at 7:00pm, plus Bowie music videos. Costumes welcome!

Documentarian D.A. Pennebaker focuses his lens on a 1973 concert by David Bowie, who performs under the moniker Ziggy Stardust with his glam-rock backing band, the Spiders From Mars. While some backstage footage of the theatrical singer-songwriter is featured, the majority of the film is devoted to the music played onstage, which includes hits, album cuts and covers of Rolling Stones and Velvet Underground songs. Bowie also shocks fans by announcing his intention to drop the Stardust persona.

Please join us at the River Garden during Gallery Walk on Friday, Feb. 5 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. for “Love Local” — an evening of music, art, and celebration of all things local.

Representatives of a variety of area non-profits will be exhibiting — discover what the organizations do, how to obtain services from them, how to participate in their programs, and how to volunteer.

Local singer-songwriter-pianist Hannah Hoffman will be entertaining with her unique vocal style, “an edgy soulfulness reminiscent of Janis Joplin meets songbird.”

Free Monday Morning Movies at the Brattleboro Senior Center. We even have goodies for the show.

“Heating it up with the Ladies of the Rainbow” on Saturday, February 6 at 8:00 p.m. at the VFW on Black Mountain Road in Brattleboro will be this year’s major fundraiser for the Windham County Heat Fund.

In 2005 Daryl Pillsbury and Richard Davis decided to find a way to help people struggling to pay for home heating fuel who were not eligible for existing programs.  They simply decided to raise money and then figure out who was in need and help those people.

They have worked closely with SEVCA and the Windham County HELP Fund so that people can be connected with assistance programs. The Heat Fund is a one-time band-aid, usually consisting of a minimum fuel delivery. The Fund tries to make sure people have explored all other avenues of assistance first.

An annual tradition since 2007, An Extra Special Selectboard Winter Holiday Thing captures the spirit of both the holidays and the selectboard, regardless of who is currently serving.

On Saturday evening, November 14, Strolling of the Heifers proudly presents An Evening With Rabbi Bob Alper: Honorary Comedic Advisor to Pope Francis. The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, downtown Brattleboro. Seating is limited to 200 people, and all seats are $20.

On Saturday, October 10, from 10 am to 4 pm, The Grammar School in Putney, Vermont, will transform our campus into a medieval village once again as we host our annual Medieval Faire. This event has been a family favorite for more than 25 years!

Enjoy the festivities while the King and his royal court preside over the Faire. Kids can ride a flying dragon, battle a knight, and watch a joust with medieval riding games. Fairgoers can also shop for goods in the village market and watch extravagant entertainment, including live music and a puppet show. You can even be knighted by the King himself!

Brattleboro – This weekend, Sandglass Theater will launch the ninth edition of the Puppets in the Green Mountains International Festival, a rich selection of events and performances taking place all around Brattleboro and Putney, Vermont. The festival will feature an action-packed gala opening, a massive outdoor performance by Bread and Puppet Theater, and two of the last local performances of Sandglass Theater’s own award-winning D-Generation, a show about the effects of dementia upon individuals, families, and communities. Visiting artists are arriving from Cuba, Germany, England, Mexico, Quebec, and all around the United States to present this vast array of performances for adults and children of all ages.

You may recognize Wyatt from the Daily Show, but did you know he was a writer for King of the Hill, the Mike Judge look at Texas? I didn’t.

It makes a bit of sense. He was born in NYC in 1976, but was moved to Texas as a kid. He’s now a Brooklyn resident.

Have you taken any classes with the professor?

“The World’s Foremost Authority” was born in Brooklyn in 1914, and believe it or not, is still going. This is despite living through World Wars, the Depression, the blacklists he was put on for being supportive of Cuban kids and communists, and panhandling for charity in the Queens Midtown Tunnel.
