Do cold climate heat pumps make sense for you? Cold climate heat pumps have rapidly emerged as a promising technology for Vermont. Come to a workshop to learn about heat pump options for both hot water and space heating to see if they make sense for your home, business, or rental property.
These devices provide heat and domestic hot water using 25-50% less energy than conventional systems. They are environmentally-friendly as well – 87% free of carbon emissions when the electricity comes from Green Mountain Power. Heat pumps can also be combined with solar electric panels to provide 100% renewable energy.

A wide range of all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, along with electric-assisted bikes, cargo bikes and electric scooters will be on display, with many available for test rides. Electric vehicle owners and local dealers will be on hand to answer questions, and table displays will provide information on electric vehicles. At 2:30 pm, local bike enthusiast Dave Cohen will offer a talk on the benefits of electric and cargo bikes.
I studied French for years in school and learned lots of rules and conjugations, but graduated unable to have a conversation in French. I’m guessing you know someone else who had a similar experience in a language class.
This past summer I took Express Fluency’s advanced-beginner weekend class with Maggie Smith and I was amazed by how much I remembered/picked up in such a short time. I am thrilled to be adding more French classes to Express Fluency’s course options.

Statewide Vermont – NPR host John Hockenberry, Pulitzer Prize winners Joseph Ellis and Hedrick Smith, and Grammy-nominated musician and historian Stephen Wade are among the presenters in the fourteenth season of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series beginning October 7 at nine sites statewide. The series runs October through May at 7:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month (unless otherwise noted). Talks take place in Brattleboro, Essex Junction, Manchester, Middlebury, Montpelier, Newport, Norwich, Rutland, and St. Johnsbury.
Beginning on Thursday, October 8, 2015 Brattleboro Area Hospice will offer a Bereavement Volunteer Training at its home office at 191 Canal Street in Brattleboro. This 21 hour volunteer training will run on Thursdays from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. The final session will take place on November 19th.
Bereavement Volunteers provide emotional support and companionship to individuals grieving the death loss of a loved one. Trained volunteers are asked to commit to one hour per week spent with a bereaved individual.
Parents and children are invited on Saturday, September 26, 10:30 – 12:00, to a free workshop, Calling all Kids: It’s OK to Talk about Death! at Brooks Memorial Library Upstairs Meeting Room (next to the Children’s Section).
Children who have experienced a death loss, whether of a beloved pet, friend or family member, don’t often have the opportunity to meet with other children who’ve had a similar experience. Through facilitated art activities and guided conversation led by Children’s Bereavement Counselor Elizabeth Ungerleider, this is an opportunity for children of all ages to ask questions, share stories and express feelings in a safe environment.
Express Fluency is offering a free Spanish class Thursday, September 10th from 6pm-7pm. Participants will experience a fun and effective way of acquiring language and will leave the class knowing how to order a drink, and tell a joke, in Spanish.
We will also share the secrets of language acquisition- which students can apply to any language they choose to pursue.
Brattleboro. Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity has released What Should Happen When Your Child Reports School-Based Aggression in time for the upcoming school year. “What Should Happen is the latest in a series of easy to read brochures for parents, guardians and community members on what they should expect when a child they know reports being a victim of school-based aggression,” according to Curtiss Reed, Jr., Vermont Partnership’s executive director.
Steven Strong, founder of one of the first solar companies in the United States and an acclaimed industry leader and innovator, will speak at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, 139 Main Street in downtown Brattleboro on Friday, September 11 at 7:00 pm.
Strong’s talk will assess the current state of solar in this country, how we reached this point, and what needs to be done in the future to make solar mainstream. It will cover all aspects of solar, from individual residences to large-scale utility solar plants.
There is a suggested donation of $10 for the talk. Light refreshments will be provided.

Local residents will have a chance to learn about becoming a nationally Board Certified Coach (BCC) as The Synthesis Center introduces its psychosynthesis classes in Brattleboro this summer. On Wednesday, July 22nd at 6:30 p.m., there will be a free presentation at the The Synthesis Center’s regional office at 73 Main Street in Brattleboro. A follow up session is scheduled for August 23rd.
Psychosynthesis is distinctive for blending Western psychology with Eastern spiritual traditions, and it has long been applied in the fields of counseling, education and the helping professions as a tool for self development. More recently, the Center has introduced this method to the emerging field of life coaching, offering tools and applied practices for creating life change.

Plans are in the works for a late September (25-27) reunion when Landmark College celebrates its 30th year. This is the institution that since 1985 has occupied the former Windham campus. The dates are during foliage season, so make hotel/motel reservations soon.
