The BUHS #6 Board of Directors will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 15 in the WRCC Cusick Conference Room.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 – Vermont was awarded $7.3 million in what is expected to be a $33.4 million, four-year federal grant for pre-kindergarten programs at public schools and Head Start agencies throughout the state.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) announced the grant today.

Andi Waisman, Brattleboro Project Director for Vermont Works For Women (VWW) will be offering an “Intro to the Trades workshop” to inform attendees about non-traditional careers that earn a livable wage including an upcoming Brattleboro-based training in skilled manufacturing. The presentation will begin at 5 PM on Wednesday, December 10, in the library’s meeting room.

The Brattleboro Town school board is holding a public forum this coming Wednesday, 11/19, on the role and the effects of various standardized testing that takes place in our schools.  This has been a point of lively discussion on iBrattleboro and it would be worth encouraging the school board to continue this process of public engagement by attending.

The forum takes place at Academy School on Wednesday, November 19, 6:00-7:30 pm.

Come to the Electric Vehicle Demonstration & Forum on Saturday, October 25th from 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm at the Marlboro College Graduate School, 28 Vernon Street in downtown Brattleboro. A wide range of all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, along with electric-assisted bikes, cargo bikes and electric scooters will be on display and available for test rides in the parking lot from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Electric vehicle owners and local dealers will be on hand to answer questions.

Windham Regional Career Center Offers Fall Community Education and Training Programs

The Windham Regional Career Center at Brattleboro Union High School is pleased to announce their Community Education and Training Programs for this fall. Betsy Gentile, Workforce Development Manager and Adult Education Coordinator is coordinating 15 community education and training programs to meet the needs of area employers and their employees as well as providing personal and professional enrichment opportunities for all community members.

BURLINGTON, VT– Vermont’s Congressional Delegation and Governor Peter Shumlin today announced a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) award of $2.4 million to the Community College of Vermont in Waterbury for job training.

The funds are a part of a $2 billion DOL program investing in job training at community colleges around the country.

The Northeast PsychoNeuroImmunology Institute for Healing presents “Train Your Brain to Retain,” a one-day program bringing people together to improve their mental acuity. On Saturday, October 25^th, we will gather in a relaxed, private home setting to learn memory strengthening techniques, to support one another on our memory journeys, to eat food that’s good for the brain (and the soul!), and to have a good time.

Participants will learn how to give their memories a workout by using tools proven through neuro-science. Advances in neuroplasticity show us that the brain can actually increase its capacity to learn and remember. This is a class for people who know their minds are still capable, but who have noticed declines in their sharpness.

In a letter sent to the parents and “caregivers” of all Vermont schoolchildren, the state’s new Secretary of Education Rebecca Holcombe said in no uncertain terms that our public schools are not failing, despite declarations to the contrary from the federal government.  According to Holcombe, “every school whose students took the NECAP tests last year is now considered a ‘low performing’ school by the US Department of Education.”  But, she said, “The Vermont Agency of Education does not agree with this federal policy, nor do we agree that all of our schools are low performing.”
