ACT 46 UPDATE FROM BRATTLEBORO.

The Brattleboro representatives from the Act 46 Study Committee will host a community forum on Wednesday, August 24th from 6-7.30 PM at Oak Grove School. This will be the final presentation of the proposed articles of agreement to the community, before the Study Committee officially votes on whether or not to send them to the Vermont Board of Education for approval.

Brattleboro Area Hospice to hold Hospice Care Volunteer Training and Seeks Participants

Beginning on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 Brattleboro Area Hospice will offer its hospice care volunteer training in Brattleboro, VT. This 33 hour volunteer training will run on Tuesday mornings from September 20 – November 29 from 9 am – 12 pm.

Throughout Windham County hospice volunteers aid neighbors and their families who are living with life-threatening illnesses. Help may range from running errands to gardening to emotional and physical support. Hospice care volunteers report the work as challenging yet very rewarding. Training topics include hospice philosophy, nuts and bolts of volunteering, ethical issues, reflection on personal attitudes toward death and dying, and grief issues among others. Presenters include professionals from the community as well as Hospice staff and volunteers.


Learn to Read Hebrew!

If you’re interested in learning to decode Hebrew so you will be able to read and follow Hebrew in a prayerbook, Faith Schuster will teach a Learn to Read Hebrew class in the fall on Sunday afternoons at 4:00, beginning on September 18th at Brattleboro Area Jewish Community in West Brattleboro. There is no fee but you’ll need a textbook ($10-15). We need at least five people for the course, which will run for eight to ten weeks.

HCRS To Host Brattleboro Screening of Healing Voices

New Documentary Seeks to Shift Public’s Perception of “Mental Illness”

Springfield, VT, April 20, 2016 – Health Care and Rehabilitation Services (HCRS), Vermont’s second largest community mental-health agency, will join more than 125 community organizations around the world on Friday, April 29th to host a premier screening of Healing Voices. The new documentary places a spotlight on mental health – or what society refers to as “mental illness.”

The HCRS-sponsored screening will take place in Brattleboro on April 29th at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, 139 Main Street, #407. A reception will begin at 6:30 pm, with the screening starting promptly at 7 pm. A panel discussion will follow the conclusion of the film.


Act 46 Study Committees Meeting

As part of the services offered through the Act 46 Implementation Project, representatives from the VT School Boards Association, VT Superintendents Association, and the VT Agency of Education will be available to meet individually with Act 46 Study Committees in Brattleboro on April 25th.

The purpose of the meetings are to assist in answering questions about the law and to provide information and feedback in response to scenarios that are being explored in communities. Members of the WSESU Act 46 Study Committee are scheduled to meet with this group from 9:30-11:00 (4/25/16). This meeting will take place at the Marlboro Grad Center – Ledges Conference Room. www.wsesu.org

Theater Camp this August in Guilford

Guilford Free Library and Guilford Center Stage are collaborating on Stage & Stream, a new, weeklong theater and library camp this August 15-19.  The session will be open to 5th-8th graders, and will be FREE to Guilford kids.  Those from other towns may attend for a fee of $50 for the week.

The camp day will run Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm at a pair of adjacent 1890’s venues in the village of Guilford Center.
