Brattleboro-Hinsdale Bridge Opening Final Reminder

BRIDGE OPENING FINAL REMINDER

Brattleboro-Hinsdale

BF A004(152)

The new bridge for New Hampshire/Vermont Route 119 is scheduled to open this week.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Motorists should watch for message boards throughout the area indicating the new bridge is open.

A new traffic pattern is scheduled to be in place in Brattleboro by the end of the day Thursday, December 5th. Barricades will be set up on Bridge Street to encourage local traffic only. Eastbound travelers to VT/NH 119 will need to turn onto Vermont Route 142 (Vernon Street) and access the new bridge at the new signalized intersection. Westbound traffic on VT/NH 119 will need to turn onto VT 142 north to proceed to U.S. Route 5 (Canal Street).

Pedestrian traffic should continue to utilize the existing accommodations on the truss bridges. The new bridge will remain closed to pedestrians until the Spring of 2025 due to continued contractor operations within the work zone.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The bridge opening exact day and time will depend upon the weather and the coordination with the pavement marking subcontractor on the New Hampshire side of the bridge. Existing markings will need to be eradicated and the new alignment marked in concert with traffic being switched over. The contractor will be standing by the day before and the day after the scheduled opening of December 5th in case the opening needs to be adjusted due to inclement weather.

The bridge will be open for motor vehicle traffic, however, work will continue on the bridge, under the bridge, on VT 142, and in New Hampshire on the old NH 119, Mountain Road, and the Marina access until everything is fully complete. Shoulder and lane closures are projected to continue into the Spring of 2025. The new bridge sidewalk will not be open to pedestrians until next year and pedestrians and recreational users of the old bridges should still be aware of active construction in both New Hampshire and Vermont.

LOCATION:

The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.

The project completion date was changed from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025. Motor vehicle traffic is scheduled to be on the new bridge December 2024 and pedestrian traffic Spring 2025.

PROJECTED COMPLETION: June 30, 2025
