Construction Update

Brattleboro-Hinsdale

BF A004(152)

DATE: Thursday, September 26, 2024

TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

One-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers may be expected on Vermont Route 142 as they build the intersection for the new bridge. Motorists should watch for increased construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone, and for concrete trucks working near the roadway.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

Construction traffic can get onto the bridge from the Vermont end so motorists need to be aware of an increase in construction vehicles on VT 142, especially as they slow to turn onto the bridge.

This week, concrete was placed for the New Hampshire expansion joint as well as the adjoining deck end and overhangs, so the moment slabs adjacent to VT 142 are the last structures of the project in need of concrete. That placement of concrete for the moment slabs is set to be done Monday, September 30th. The proximity of the concrete trucks to VT 142 may require alternating one lane traffic controlled by flaggers.

Bridge rail installation continues on schedule. Cleaning the deck to prepare it for bead blasting and application of waterproof membrane is ongoing. The crew installing the membrane will begin their work Friday, September 27th, and continue next week. Weather permitting, paving is set to begin Monday, October 7th.

Removal of the temporary trestle, with its intermittent noise from the diesel hammer, also continues, as does site clean up.

Planning continues for the Barrows and Fisher property that was disturbed for the construction of Pier 1. Work on restoring the drainage may begin next week. As this site is reached from Depot Street, there may be an increase in construction equipment traffic along that route.

LOCATION:

The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.

Unanticipated delays at a couple of the piers have adjusted the project completion date from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025.

PROJECTED COMPLETION: June 30, 2025
