Construction Update Brattleboro-Hinsdale Bridge – April 3, 2024

Construction Update

Brattleboro-Hinsdale

BF A004(152)

DATE: Wednesday, April 3, 2024

TRAFFIC IMPACT:

Delivery of steel girders to Pier 1 is scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, April 9th, 10th, and 11th, and Monday, April 15th.

The delivery route will be along New Hampshire and Vermont Route 119 to Depot Street. This impact will include a short duration closure (approximately 15 minutes) of the twin bridges beginning at the intersection of Bridge Street to Canal Street, Main Street, and Vermont Route 142. Uniformed Traffic Officers will be located at the intersection’s entrance to Bridge Street during the closure period. All deliveries are tentatively set for 1:00 p.m. to accommodate the train schedule.

The contractor’s crews have been accessing the Vermont Abutment off of VT 142 and will continue to access this location next week. No traffic impacts are anticipated, but motorists are advised to watch for vehicles, including concrete trucks, entering and exiting the construction site.

Delivery of steel to the abutment site on VT 142 is currently scheduled for later in April. The delivery route is planned to provide direct access from the south along VT 142 from Massachusetts Route 10. More details will follow when available.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

The forms for the cap for Pier 1 are being stripped, and the grinding and leveling of the bearing seats has begun and will continue into next week to allow placement of the girders when they arrive.

Construction of the pad to support the crane needed to place the steel girders is to be completed Monday, and the crane relocated to that pad.

The girders will be flown into place atop Pier 1 and connected to the waiting girders atop the shoring tower. Once the girders are erected completely between Piers 1 and 2, the temporary shoring tower will be disassembled.

The remaining water in the three tanks of the water treatment system has been treated and passed all tests, and is being released to the Brattleboro Waste Water Treatment Plant. Once emptied, the tanks and filters can be cleaned, dismantled, and removed from the site next week.

Work will continue at the VT Abutment site next week when a concrete placement is scheduled to bring the bearing seats up to elevation.

LOCATION:

The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.

Unanticipated delays at a couple of the piers have adjusted the project completion date from Fall 2024 to Summer 2025.

PROJECTED COMPLETION: June 30, 2025

Although we can’t wait for the bridge to be completed, we need it to be a safe and sound structure. We’re happy to see that nothing is being rushed. It will be completed when everything is done correctly. Thanks to everyone involved.
