Sanders: Immigration Bill Needs Improvement, Vermont Senator Faults Provisions on Guest Workers

WASHINGTON, June 4 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today congratulated the Senate Judiciary Committee for drafting an immigration reform bill that would provide a path to citizenship for 11 million immigrants in the United States and help their children become citizens.

He also supported provisions in the measure that would strengthen border enforcement, prevent unscrupulous employers from hiring illegal workers and give legal status to foreign workers needed to keep Vermont’s dairy farms and apple orchards in business.

Sanders, however, expressed strong concern that large American corporations in the midst of very high unemployment were using immigration reform to lower wages and benefits for American workers.

Earn Time Credits for Helping Your Neighbors Save Energy

A unique collaboration has recently been formed between the Brattleboro Energy Committee and Brattleboro Time Trade (BTT). Volunteers who register with BTT can now earn credit for assisting the energy committee with the Vermont Home Energy Challenge.

“We are very happy to provide a grant to the Vermont Home Energy Challenge,” said BTT coordinator Abby Mnookin. “We can think of no better use of our resources than to support a project where people are helping their neighbors to make their homes more energy efficient, save money and help stop climate change.” BTT volunteers working on the Challenge are eligible to receive up to 15 hours in Time Trade credit.

CRVBL Weekend Roundup – Sunapee and Newport Wins

SUNAPEE AND NEWPORT WINNERS IN CRVBL WEEKEND ACTION

By Kevin McElhinney, CRVBL

The Sunapee Old Lakers improved their season record to five wins and two losses by defeating the Brattleboro River Rats, while the Newport Polar Bears climbed above the .500 mark with a victory over the Keene Black Dawgs in Connecticut River Valley Baseball League action over the weekend.

At Bates Memorial Field in Newport, the host Polar Bears pounded out hits in five run second inning and a six run fifth and cruised to a 15-2 win over Keene Sunday afternoon.

The Winner of The Iraq War? China.

Here’s a headline from today’s New York Times:

“China Is Reaping Biggest Benefits of Iraqi Oil Boom”.

Wow.

So the USA topples Saddam and China gets the oil. Pat yourself on the back if you saw that coming in 2003.

I think back to the run up to this war when officials from the Bush administration were spreading manure (synonym for a pithier word) about the war not costing America anything because the oil would pay for it. I think one man went so far as to say (when told that some in Washington were suggesting that the war would cost at least $22 billion) that that was reckless and irresponsible, treasonous, even. That at most the war would cost $2 billion and was more likely to see a profit.

I Had A Dream!

It was 2016, and I had been moved into a nursing home. My deaf room-mate had Alzheimer’s, and he insisted on watching TV whenever he was awake, which seemed like always. His favorite show was Fox News, so it was easy for me to keep on top of things in the “real” world.

As I mentioned, it was 2016, and the presidential campaigns were in full swing. The Dems had nominated Hilary Clinton, and in a surprise move, offered the VP slot to a newly minted Democrat, Chris Christie, Gov. of New Jersey. The Repubs chose Jeb Bush, and in a strategy to capture the Hispanic vote, selected Sen.Ted Cruz of Texas (dubbed the “Cruz Missile” by Geraldo Rivera).

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – June 4, 2013

An architect and engineer for the Police Fire Facility Project might be selected at the next regular Tuesday meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.

The board will return to the issue of serving drinks outdoors at Arkham, begin the process of filling an upcoming Selectboard vacancy, issue warrants for unlicensed dogs, and begin making Town Committee appointments. And you can bring up anything else not on the agenda during Public Participation.

Watch on BCTV or attend in person, and look here for full coverage on Wednesday.

Sanders Statement on Social Security Trust Fund Report

BURLIGTON, Vt., May 31 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a Senate Budget Committee member and founder of the Defending Social Security Caucus, issued the following statement after Social Security trustees today released their annual report on the retirement system’s finances:

“The report from the Social Security trustees confirms what many of us have known, that Social Security is not ‘going broke,’ that it can pay every benefit owed to every eligible American for the next 20 years and that after 2033 there is enough in reserve to pay three-quarters of future benefits.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project on Saturday, June 8th at 8 pm

The music composed and performed by Eugene Uman, pianist and leader of the Convergence Project, achieves a difficult feat: it balances on an artistic tightrope between fresh, innovative and exploratory on one side, and accessible, understandable, exceedingly enjoyable and fun to listen to on the other. What keeps the project unified is the integrity of the compositions, the shared vision of the group’s members and the careful balance of jazz harmonies with Colombian rhythms.

He is an institute professor and professor emeritus in the department of linguistics and philosophy at MIT, where he has worked for over 50 years. History educator Daniel Falcone spoke with Chomsky in his Cambridge office on May 14.

He has some interesting, iconoclastic ideas on a lot of things. Here are a few excerpts from this interview.

VY Push Poll?

On Wednesday, June 28, a caller identified himself as calling from “Vermont Opinion Services,” asking me to answer some questions. It soon became apparent that this was what is known as a push poll – a poll paid for by one side of an issue. The questions in this poll all related to Vermont Yankee, energy in general, and nuclear power.

Some of the questions were as follows: (not exact quotes, but taken from my notes of the call)

-Do you support keeping Vermont Yankee operating knowing it helps make Vermont energy independent?

Weekend Concert Series – Dire Straits

Let’s pop over to Australia for the final night of Dire Strait’s Brothers In Arms tour from April 1986.

As with many groups, the best known Dire Straits songs are not necessarily their best tracks. This show features a mixture of hits (at the time) and some lesser-known songs.

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits always seemed to fly just a bit under the radar, and like Kid Creole, probably didn’t get the full recognition they deserved. It was the 80’s and they didn’t have many dance moves to show off on MTV, though they did have some success with videos.

Are You Being Manipulated? Tobacco Industry Spends $27.4 Million Annually Marketing to Vermonters

World No Tobacco Day 2013 [May 31, 2013] calls for bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship are one of the most effective ways of reducing tobacco consumption. As more countries make progress towards implementing complete bans, the tobacco industry is increasingly using tactics such as brand extension, product placement and stealth marketing to sell its products. The ultimate goal of World No Tobacco Day is to contribute to protect present and future generations not only from these devastating health consequences, but also against the social, environmental and economic scourges of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.

Your Scariest Horror Movie Rec?

Okay, folks. I love horror movies and am hoping to see some recommendations that I don’t know of already. Personally, the gore and torture films aren’t what I consider scary horror. I’m talking about things that fill you with dread, are tense and leave indelible impressions. For instance… after seeing the Blair Witch Project I couldn’t get the sight of the guy standing in the basement corner out of my mind. Creepy is much more insidious than slash.

So please, if you’ve a mind to, tell what movies left that mark on you.
