Latchis Arts Seeks Crowds to Support The Heavens

Latchis Arts is going for it! With nearly 80% of the funds raised so far, the non-profit group is committed to closing the main auditorium of the Latchis Theatre on August 1, in order to replace the seats and restore the historic zodiac ceiling, dubbed the Campaign for The Heavens and The Earth.

With only $118,000 to go out of the campaign goal of $550,000, “all the pieces are in place. There’s no turning back!” according to Managing Director Gail Nunziata.

Students Tell Sanders How College Loans Impact Families and Careers

WASHINGTON, July 9 – Responding to more than 700 emails from college students and graduates in Vermont and around the nation, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called today for restoring student the loan interest rate to the level that was charged before the rate doubled on July 1 to 6.8 percent.

“We have a major crisis in our country today in terms of the high cost of college and the incredible debt burden that college students and their families are facing,” Sanders said in a Senate floor speech. “Our job is to improve that situation, to lessen the burden on students and their families – not to make it worse.”

Sanders read from some of the emails he received about how student loans have affected people’s careers and families.

Downtown Brattleboro Lights Flashing on Friday?

When leaving work around 2 on Friday, I–for some crazy reason–decided to drive through town. Traffic was very heavy, including pedestrian traffic. To my surprise, the lights were flashing , resulting in driving chaos, and making it practically suicidal for pedestrians, I ended up belligerently holding up traffic behind me to allow a lady to cross the street who had been waiting for quite a while in the hot sun.

Who makes the decision on those lights? I am going to have to dissagree with the decision on Friday, unless it was unavoidable. I was very relieved to reach Gougers Market, as I saw many close calls involving turning cars, stressed pedestrians, and generally busy traffic.

July 3rd was SeVWA’s Second 2013 River Sampling Day

Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance’s (SeVWA’s) water quality monitoring program was begun about 10 years ago. At that time, in 2003, the organization was known as West River Watershed Alliance (WRWA). Our 2013 stream monitoring program began on Wednesday, June 19th and this past Wednesday was SeVWA’s second 2013 river sampling day.

Things went well for most volunteer monitors on Wednesday morning – though rivers and streams were running murky, high and fast. Volunteers typically sample between 6 – 7:30 AM on scheduled monitoring days. Because of the amount of rain that had fallen in the region the previous 24-48 hours, the water level and flow was too deep and fast for three sites to be sampled along the Williams River, but generally the sampling, drop-off/pick-up/delivery schedule for getting samples to the lab for testing went smoothly.

What’s all the blue stuff in this picture?

The picture is of the Bavarian town of Stadtsteinach in the Frankenwald, about a four-hour train ride from the airport in Frankfurt, Germany. The town is described by Thom Hartmann in his book Rebooting the American Dream.

Here’s how Thom describes it.

TITLE:
Majority Mankind Watched July 4 Fireworks Recalled Spectacular US Cruel Night Bombing Baghdad
by jay janson

DESCRIPTION:
Baghdad, ancient exotic marvel in the cradle of human civilization, Mesopotamia, ‘the land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers,’ where the first cities on Earth were created. Did Independence Day bring uneasy feelings about America eventually being brought to justice for so much firing on the poor overseas and denying other nations independence from subservience to America’s Wall Street? Majority Mankind will seek justice

Remembering Vermont’s Role at the Battle of Gettysburg on its 150th Anniversary

This 4rth of July, 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the battle of Gettysburg. It is worth noting the important part that soldiers from our state played in that battle.

I’m not a Civil War history buff, but I have read Howard Coffin’s Nine Months to Gettysburg. It is the account of the Second Vermont Brigade whose nine month enlistment was days from expiring when the fighting at Gettysburg began.

Golden Eagles Near Vernon?

Yesterday I was driving North on 142 in a wooded section of Vernon, when a very large brown bird flew across the highway. A split second later, 2 such birds recrossed the highway

They were NOT turkeys, vultures, hawks or ospreys.

I’m thinking golden eagles, but it appears they are extremely rare in Vermont.

Lots of Rain with Little News Coverage

Upstate Vermont, central Vermont, Albany New York area, and multiple parts of New Hampshire have experianced in some cases over six inches of rain in the last few days.   New Hampshire and New York have decleared states of emergency to deal with well over thirty roads made unpassible as a result of these rains.   All this disaster going on and not even a minute of news coverage last night.

A few years ago the similar damage occured and it made national news.   It seems that this is the new normal.   Flooding and destructive storms everyday.  Some place in the USA is facing some type of natural disaster.  This seems big news to me yet it is becoming so common that I hear people in the blogs saying they are tired of hearing about it.

Happy Fourth of July

Happy independence day.  Stay healthy drink lots of water and come out to enjoy the Fourth of July’s parade and events here in Brattleboro.  Bring an umbrella a nice way to stay in the shade….

“Everyone Does It.”

The classical remark which gets parents to explain right and wrong to their child.

But how often do adults make this remark in board rooms and business meetings? Have you ever been in a situation where “everyone does it” was the justification for questionable conduct, and if so how did you respond?
