Weekend Concert Series: The Pogues
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, I was thinking it might be nice to listen to some Pogues…. The Pogues, for the uninitiated, were an Irish traditional punk rock band from London, led by the inimitable Shane MacGowan and his accomplice Spider Stacy. They’re best known for their Christmas ballad Fairy Tale of New York, featuring Kirsty MacColl, but MacGowan and the band wrote many memorable songs, dripping with authenticity and God knows what else, that make you think you’ve woken up in a rowdy Irish bar at the height of the party.
Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – March 17, 2015
Repairs to the Green Street retaining wall and the Elliot Street bridge will be front and center at the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.
The board will also take up, again, a discussion of Property Assesed Clean Energy districts, will have second reading and public hearings for two amended ordinances, make appointments, assign Representative Town Meeting duties, and more.
Meetings are in the Municipal Center on Main Street. You can attend in person, comment, and bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.
Reminders: I-91 Exit 3 On Ramps Closed Sunday Noon to 7pm and Heavy Weekend Traffic
A reminder that this Sunday from noon to 7:00 pm we will close both the northbound and southbound Exit 3 on-ramps to reduce congestion on I-91 Southbound caused by merging traffic. Please use Vt Route 5 as an alternate route.
And please expect heavy traffic and resulting delays between Exits 2 and 3 on I-91 this weekend. Traffic is likely to be heaviest northbound on Friday afternoon and evening, and southbound on Sunday afternoon and evening. Those with flexible travel plans should consider alternate travel times and/or routes. Please also consider using Vt Rt 5 as an alternate route.
Tour de Heifer Promises “Vermont’s Most Challenging Dirt Road Rides”
Registration is now open for the fifth annual Tour de Heifer, which, organizers say, includes Vermont’s most challenging dirt road cycling rides.
The Tour is organized as a fund-raiser for Strolling of the Heifers, and takes place on Sunday of Strolling of the Heifers Weekend, June 7.
The Tour’s 60-mile and 30-mile challenge routes follow dirt roads with mimimal pavement. Both entail significant elevation change — nearly 7,000 feet for the 60-miler, and over 3,000 feet for the 30-miler.

I-91 Exit 3 Ramps To Close Sunday
This Sunday, we will close both the northbound and southbound Exit 3 on-ramps to reduce congestion on I-91 Southbound caused by merging traffic. Because of highway logistics, we need to close both northbound and southbound on-ramps. Local southbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 south to Exit 2 or 1, and local northbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 north to Exit 4. Sheriff officers will assist in directing traffic. The on-ramps at Exit 3 will be closed from noon to 7:00 pm.

Public Invited to ‘Trail Talk’ To Be Held for I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Project
The PCL+FIGG Team will conduct the next on-site “trail talk” for the Public on Saturday, March 14, 2015. There has been a lot of progress at the I-91 Brattleboro Bridge project site, which will be shared with attendees. The talks will originate at the West River Trail near the marina. The trail talk will be led by Caleb Linn, Project Manager for PCL (lead contractor) and William Johnson, Senior Quality Engineer for FIGG (bridge designer).
Interested participants should meet the PCL+FIGG Team at the West River Trail trailhead on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at 8 a.m. and the talk will begin at 8:15 a.m. Participants will walk the trail to the I-91 bridge site, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
Time, Money, And A Little Bit Of Luck
The two scarcest commodities on this planet are money and time. We never seem to have enough of either one. But this isn’t true of everyone. Some people have lots of one, some of the other, and some lucky people have both. How can this be? I have a socioeconomic theory that the time/money ratio is in fact an indicator of economic class. Here’s how it works:
If you have both time and money, you’re probably affluent. You simply have the money and don’t need to work that hard for it, if at all. Consequently, you have lots of time too. The world is your oyster. You can have your cake and eat it too.
Over Hard or Easy?
Many years ago I was employed by a prestigious institute, which partnered with an esteemed university, to visit elementary schools across Vermont (all names withheld) and closely observe classrooms in action. There was a scoring form used, the rubrics were primarily oriented towards engagement, involvement, inspiration, and critical thinking.
One classroom I visited was vaunted in advance as a high scoring classroom on standardized tests, the teacher a veteran known for their effectiveness. This was an early ed room, first or second grade. The teacher was brusque, professional, their M.O. seemed to be some kind of tough love. My work began as usual with the start of the day– sessions lasted a whole day– our role was akin to the Star Trek prime directive, observing only, being careful to not interfere.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Brattleboro AAUW presents: The Theatrical, Eccentric, Flamboyant Madame Sherri, a talk by Eric Stanway on Tues., March 17 at 7 p.m. at the Brattleboro Historical Society History Center at the Masonic Temple, 196 Main St., Brattleboro.
Stanway is author of “Madame Sherri: The Special Edition,” an expanded biography of the diva of the 20’s who scandalized the locals for years before succumbing to poverty and dying in a Brattleboro boarding house, leaving her castle in the woods of West Chesterfield, N.H., to crumble to ruins.
Susan Keese
I just read that VPR’s southern Vermont correspondent, Susan Keese, passed away.
I’ve known Susan for many years, after first meeting her to talk about things going on at the Estey Organ Museum. Being a radio producer, her medium was sound, and stories that had interesting sounds or music being played were often of interest to her and her listeners.
She got very interested in the 2005 EsteyFest, a gathering of reed organ enthusiasts, many of whom brought instruments with them.
Over the years, whenever I had a potential story that included good sounds, I’d make sure she knew about it.
