Sonnet Reading in Guilford Wednesday

SONNET READING IN GUILFORD MAY 13

I am pleased to be collaborating with Tom Ragle, also of Guilford,  on a public reading of Sonnets on Wednesday, May 13.  The 7:00 pm program will take place at Guilford Community Church, and is admission-free with donations welcome.

Tom is well-known as past president of Marlboro College, where he also taught literature.  He is a recently-published poet, has given many readings of classic English poetry on WVEW, and is a longtime member of Write Action.

I have been reading aloud, both poetry and especially Christmas stories, since I arrived in Guilford in 1968.

Burn Ban in Brattleboro and Vermont

Last night’s showers did little to ease the dry conditions in the area. The State of VT and local burn ban is still in effect until May 19 or until it is revoked or extended.

The burn ban means that there is no burning until the order is revoked or expired.

“A transformer exploded at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in suburban New York. (35 mi. from NYC).

The blaze, which sparked an oil leakage, forced the automatic shutdown of the facility’s Unit 3 reactor, which sits near the Hudson River and supplies five per cent of the power to the state.

The fire – which was seen sending plumes of smoke into the air by passersby on the other side of the river – was quickly extinguished and the reactor was deemed safe and stable,

Weekend Comedy Series: Demetri Martin

“If I…” is the name of the comedy special by Demetri Martin that combines observations, philosophy, and comedy, in form of presentation with slides.

You may not know, this young man was accepted into Harvard Law, but didn’t go. Instead, he went down the path of a legal education at NYU, but became a comedian instead. Probably a wise choice.

My Wife Is Bicycling From The Top Of The State, All The Way Back Home

As part of a fundraiser for Neighborhood School house, my wife is going up to the Canadian border and riding all the way back home. The fundraiser iwill help raise money to provide scholarships to the Neighborhod School House, based on financial need.

Anything helps. We mean, anything helps. It’s about 200 miles. At a penny a mile, that would only be $2.00. Go for a nickel a mile, and that’s $10.

Welcome To The USA – Police Officer Throws Grandfather to the Ground, Paralyzing Him – Video

The dirty secret about the attack on Sureshbhai Patel is that a homeowner called in and reported him as, “…a skinny black guy, he’s got a toboggan on, he’s really skinny.”

VBike – Creating a Bicycle Revolution in Vermont!

Happy spring to Ibrattleboro folks!

Some of you may know the work that has been happening in Brattleboro to rethink, revamp and re-energize the bike and bike culture towards a way more transport-oriented future. We’re talking about a bike revolution and now it’s going statewide – family cargobikes, e-assist options and all sort of designs for commuters, seniors & even businesses. Really, now almost anyone can ride with ease, even over our crazy, hilly Vermont terrain…

What’s Going On At The Old Spic & Span?

There’s been a lot of activity at this building (Across from the Firehouse). Last week saw a huge delivery of building materials. Last fall, they put on a new roof. Today they seem to be taking it off again. Are they planning a second floor?  The guys there say it’s going to be an arts center of some sort.

Ugh (Loud Motorcycles)

With the return warm weather and open windows, painfully loud motorcycles are also back, and seem to be worse than ever. Living downtown, I’m used to my apartment filling with noise from the logging trucks and ambulances that frequently pass by, but the level of nuisance from some of the motorcycles lately is at another level. Last Monday, one was so loud it left a trail of car alarms going off in its wake.

Sanders Welcomes Court Ruling on NSA – Calls for Congress to Strengthen Privacy Protections

WASHINGTON, May 7 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today welcomed a federal appeals court ruling that the National Security Agency does not have the legal authority to collect and store data on all U.S. telephone calls.

“Clearly we must do everything we can to protect our country from the serious potential of another terrorist attack, but we can and must do so in a way that also protects the constitutional rights of the American people and maintains our free society,” Sanders said. “We can do that without living in an Orwellian world where the government and private corporations know every telephone call that we make, every website we visit, everyplace we go.”

John Gorka at Next Stage on Saturday, May 9

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present contemporary folk singer/songwriter John Gorka at Next Stage on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 pm.

John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer/songwriter of the 1980’s folk scene. Hailing from New Jersey, he honed his craft and persona as a shy, wry and insightful singer/songwriter in the Greenwich Village “Fast Folk” and Boston music scenes. Gorka got his start at Godfrey Daniels, a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania which is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions in the country.
