The World Trade Center – The Lonely One and Only

When Tower One and Tower Two stood in the same location for nearly thirty years the immensity of them was palpable, in height and breadth. In 2001 several months before 911 my sister-in-law and I were riding in a moving van on a June night on the highway on the New Jersey shoreline of the Hudson River when lower Manhattan came into view. She exclaimed, “My God, look at those two buildings. What are they for?” I told her they were the World Trade Center Towers. She couldn’t take her eyes off of them until they were no longer in view. I too took a long look at them wondering when I would see them again.

Thanks to everyone who wrote us regarding iBrattleboro being offline.

The quick version of “what happened?” is that we weren’t properly notified that the domain was expiring today, and failed to renew it in advance. That led to quick renewals this morning, and waiting for it to come back online.

So, thanks for asking and welcome back. (We’re going to switch domain registrars.)

Humanities For Artificial Intelligence

I’ve been reading about the early days of computers ((‘Turing’s Cathedral,’ by George Dyson) and one thing has struck methat I hadn’t considered before: we’re creating the digital DNA and artificial intelligence of future digital entities. Everything we have done with computers since their inception adds to the collective “being” of the next generation, allowing an evolving and increasingly complex core to develop over time.

An example: The very first instructions in code were for simple tasks, such as adding or subtracting. Those tiny sequences continue to be preserved today in every digital device made.
