The New King of Thailand

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has become the new King of Thailand, succeeding the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was working at Capital Children’s Museum in DC and one of the exhibits we built was in conjunction with the government of Thailand. We filled a room the size of about three or four classrooms with examples of Thai art, architecture, food, music, language, costume, etc. and the Thai government helped out with money, artifacts and crafts, and even helped construct small buildings.

Oct. 13th and I go outside and find one of my campaign signs has been stolen.

Sufferage(sic)

Fittingly enough, it was during this election cycle my mother received her dementia diagnosis. Thanks to her stroke, she’s moved fairly quickly through the levels, like a pro-gamer unlocking ever more complex realms of challenge. When she was unable to feed herself or attend to hygiene, memory care became inevitable. My periodic visits have become studies in both specific and general cognitive atrophe, in addition to whatever else it is when a son becomes the elder to his parent.

As a way of holding on to the rail when the seas get rough, I have begun to look at the memory care facility, and mental disability, in an anthropological light. I’m always on the look out, in my mother’s case, to see what parts of personality persist, and which patterns remain as a kind of behavioral bedrock. Observing which of her symptomatic responses were there all along in nascent form. Seeing her surrounded by her ‘peers’, each with their own expeditions underway, it forces me to wonder about the so-called sanity of us all.

Education or Politics?

I noticed in the Commons. He makes interesting points about a town appointment that may not be very transparent, which of course raises questions.

Brattleboro Celebrates First Indigenous Peoples Day

It’s not often that something happens that cries out to be corrected and then, in a matter of days, it is.  I’m not talking about Vermont’s GMO law either (which Congress mooted within the month) – no, I’m talking about Indigenous Peoples Day which has been proposed, here and elsewhere, as a less racist and more fair alternative to traditional Columbus Day.  Unfortunately, honoring native American people was not something the Selectboard could get its collective mind around and Indigenous Peoples Day lost here in Brattleboro by a vote of 2-3.  But just when you thought all was lost, along comes Governor Shumlin with a state-wide proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day, signed, sealed, and delivered.  What do you know, we get to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day after

Media Bias

Once again, the NY Times has been unfair to The Donald, by reporting the facts.

“And when you’re a star they let you do it,” Mr. Trump says. “You can do anything.”

Mr. Trump then elaborated and added, “Grab them by the pussy.”

“I apologize if anyone was offended,” Trump. (One of those “if anyone was offended” apologies: as though he does not actually admit that he did anything wrong, except that in the eye of the beholder it might have been interpreted as offensive.)

To the Parents of the Children I Nearly Killed Tonight

Hey, y’know what time of the year it is?

OCTOBER.

This means it gets dark out..

This means when your children* are dressed in dark colors I can’t see them, especially when there’s lots of traffic coming the other way with their headlights on, and your children are standing by the side of the road where there’s no streetlight.

Now, obviously your children are not maimed or dead – EVEN THOUGH THEY DARTED INTO THE ROAD – because my headlights picked up their movement at the last possible second.
