Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – April 17, 2018

The Brattleboro Selectboard will receive an update on the skatepark financing and schedule from members of BASIC at their next regular meeting. They’ll also accept a $15,000 challenge grant for the project.

The board will order a new fire truck, discuss dumped tires and clean rivers, consider a letter regarding tax implications of an Act 46 merger, set goals, review rules of conduct, adopt an emergency operations plan, and more. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during Public Participation.

Stage 33 Live, A Casual Intro

Stage 33 Live is bringing River HALO and The Break Maids together for a concert this Sunday evening, April 15, at 33 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls. Doors at 6. All ages. Admission by donation. Recording for broadcast. Seating is limited to 50, plus standing room.

If you haven’t heard of Stage 33 Live, that’s no surprise. We’re new. And sporadic. And unusual. And evolving. We’re like the local love child of Ted Talks, eTown, Science Friday, BackStory, and The Little Rascals (“hey kids, let’s put on a show”). It’s a celebration of local and regional original humanities and science presentations and performances, spoken word arts, and music presented as a broadcast and web variety program, recorded during live listening events on a simple stage in a former industrial building in Bellows Falls, Vermont; a nonprofit endeavor run entirely by volunteers. Brattleboro Winter Parking Ban Lifting

ACLU Calls On Local Governments To Pursue Public Broadband

As Brattleboro begins down the path toward adding municipal broadband utility, the ACLU has weighed in with a new report “The Public Internet Option – How Local Governments Can Provide Network Neutrality, Privacy, and Access for All.”

The report compares the necessity of internet access to that of electricity and water, and says that the rollback of net neutrality laws and enforcement threatens equal access (as we have for say, roads and bridges).

Governor Scott: On February 16, I was in my office preparing for the day ahead, when everything changed. That morning, I was handed a document containing charges against an 18-year-old, outlining his detailed plan to carry out a school shooting here in Vermont.

Just two days earlier, we had all witnessed the atrocity in Parkland Florida leaving 17 innocent people – Fourteen children and 3 teachers – dead.

As I read the 13-page affidavit, I was alarmed to learn just how close we came to the same tragic fate the people of Parkland faced.

Comic Robyn Schall to Perform at the River Garden

VTC Nursing Students To Host Bone Marrow Drive in Brooks’ House Atrium

Brattleboro, VT, March 10, 2018—The Honor Society  and Community Service of the VTC ADN Nursing Program in Brattleboro, in partnership with Rutland Regional Medical Center and Be the Match Registry©, are hosting a Bone Marrow Drive in the Brooks House Atrium in Brattleboro on Saturday, April 21, 9AM-2PM. Donors need to be between the ages of 18 and 44 years old. Register with just paperwork and a cheek swab!

The only hope for individuals with blood cancers, like leukemia or other blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia, is a marrow transplant. By donating bone marrow one can help save people’s lives, such as five-year-old Kate, whose donor, Lance, was a college student and due to his participation in a campus-drive and follow-through with emails, blood work, and of course his donation, Kate will now lead a healthy life.

Utilities Division crews will start Spring Flushing of the Town water mains on Thursday April 26, 2018 at 10:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, May 12, 2018

NOTE: Some daytime flushing will continue throughout the weeks of May 14 and 21

Customers are asked to check the flushing schedule closely as flushing causes water discoloration, low water pressure and in some areas, intervals of no water.

Please note that water main flushing will occur at night and during the day.

Wayward Home Folk Musical Comes To Main Street Arts

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – The story of how a flood affects a family is told through the eyes of three storytellers in the musical “Wayward Home,” which will be performed at Main Street Arts Friday and Saturday, Apr. 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m.

With themes that are described as “mythic, with a lot of magic and hyper-theatricality,” the two-act piece has some 20 original musical numbers, with the performers accompanying themselves on piano, guitar and banjo and moving from musician to storyteller as they tell their characters’ stories in a folksy style.
