Free Food For Children This Summer

Windham Southeast Supervisory Union is pleased to announce its continued sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided this summer to all children without charge regardless of income or residence.  Meals are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

Children and families are invited to the Kick Off Event on June 25th at Living Memorial Park Pool.  Children and adults eat for free at this event.  Lunch is from 12-1pm. Free passes to the pool will be given with the meal, so stay the afternoon to swim.

Putney Road Improvements in Brattleboro

VTrans is out today on Putney Road, in the stretch from the West River bridge to NECCA, working on improving the sides of the road for pedestrians and bike riders. They are clearing brush and adding fill dirt this morning.

Traffic delays in the area, so plan ahead.

For the Love of the Game: Emma Rueter Portraits at CX Silver Gallery

Silver Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition of extraordinary black and white portraits by Emma Rueter, recent B.U.H.S. graduate, formerly also of Hilltop Montessori, and aspiring artist and photographer. The images of high school athletes, part of a series entitled ‘For the Love of the Game’, have a definite archetypal quality. All are welcome to a reception for the artist and this exhibition on Wednesday June 13, 5-7pm. The exhibition runs June 12-July 11.

The Compassionate Friends of Brattleboro

The Compassionate Friends (TCF) of Brattleboro, a national self-help organization for families that have had a child die, will hold its next monthly meeting Sunday, June 17th, at 2:00 PM at The West Village Meetinghouse, 29 South Street, West Brattleboro, VT. Meetings are held each month the third Sunday of the month at the same time and location.

The US Air Force bombed and napalmed cities, towns and villages across the North. Dean Rusk, a supporter of the war and later secretary of state, said the United States bombed “everything that moved in North Korea, every brick standing on top of another.” After running low on urban targets, U.S. bombers destroyed hydroelectric and irrigation dams in the later stages of the war, flooding farmland and destroying crops.

Its been 15 days since I last posted on iBrattleboro. Brattleboro=47 in English Reduction(2+9+1+2+2+3+5+2+6+9+6)=47. 47 is the 15th prime number.  iBrattleboro=137 in English Ordinal 137 is the 33rd prime number. 33, in numerology, is the master teacher number. Teacher=33 in English Reduction. I figured today, the 11th, was a good time to post, plus, 11 is my favorite number.

Benefit Contra Dance for Skateboard Park on Saturday, June 16

This coming Saturday, June 16, the Village Dance Series is hosting a benefit contra dance for the Brattleboro Area Skatepark project (BASIC). Peter Amidon will call and the music is by “Hidden Drive” – Arthur Davis on piano, Laurie Indenbaum on fiddle and Andy Davids on accordion. The skatepark is VERY CLOSE to being able to build at Memorial Park in Brattleboro.

Vernon Launches Campaign To Save Fireworks Display

Vernon needs some money to put on the traditional fireworks display after the Town Picnic on June 30, even though the Town Meeting in March voted to appropriate funding for the event.

In the past, Vermont Yankee generously paid for the annual fireworks. But with the nuclear plant shut down, Vermont Yankee and Entergy have eliminated most of their local largesse. So at the Vernon Town Meeting in March, voters approved an appropriation of $2,000 to supplement about $3,000 that had already been raised from other sources (including generous donations from Northstar, which is planning to decommission the nuclear plant, and FirstLight, which owns the Vernon Hydroelectric Dam). The total cost for fireworks is $5,000-$6,000.

Grove Street Hydrant Installation

Beginning on Wednesday June 13, the Grove ST entrance to the Municipal Center and Vermont State Building will be closed while Utilities crews install a new hydrant in the area. During the closure, there will be signs indicating that traffic can enter the lot from the Linden ST/Main ST end. The project is anticipated to be completed by Friday June 15, including the repaving of ditches.

Elm Street Closing For Road Work

Elm ST near #15-17 will be closed on Monday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12 from 6:30 am – approximately 5:00 pm both days while Utilities crews work in the area.

Motorists should plan to use alternate routes during the construction period. Signage will be in place to remind motorists of the road closure.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project

The Vermont Jazz Center presents Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project on June 9th at 8:00 PM.  The Director of the VJC, Uman and uses the Convergence Project as vehicle to present his original compositions and music that has influenced him – it includes Wanda Houston (vocals), Michael Zsoldos, saxophones; Jeff Galindo, trombone; Uman, piano; David Picchi, bass (electric and acoustic) and Jon Fisher on drums. There will also be surprise musical guests performing at this event.

After many musically formative years in Colombia, South America, Uman became drawn to blending the many rhythms of the country, such as cumbia, bambuco and pasillo, with jazz harmonies. While living in Antioquia, the Big Band of Medellín commissioned Uman to write for their 20-piece orchestra, resulting in Blues para Urabá. 

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Solid Waste and Parking Budgets Approved, Homelessness and Energy Discussed

Groundworks Collaborative gave the Brattleboro Selectboard a report on the seasonal overflow shelter. They admitted they don’t have the resources to develop a temporary work program, though a new effort by Youth Services might be able to pull it off, perhaps by fall. Youth Services might get a new name, too, but that’s for another time.

The board adopted the FY19 Solid Waste and Parking Budgets, but left some decisions about parking meters, apps, and credit cards for a later discussion. Progress on energy audit matters was detailed, citizens pressed for more to be done, the skatepark is close to the fundraising finish line, grants have been applied for, and citizens were appointed to various Brattleboro committees and boards.

New Funding Round for Windham County Renewable Energy Program Announced

Windham Regional Commission’s Windham County Renewable Energy Program is looking for project proposals of renewable energy installations in Windham County.  The projects require a minimum of 50% cash or in kind match. This program has funded 9 projects within Windham County.
