Please join the Vermont Center for Photography for a public artist talk with MA-based photographer, Paul Reitano, in conjunction with his solo exhibition “Thrive: The Overcome Project”. Paul’s photographic series that will be on display for the month of November stemmed from his personal battle – and eventual success story – with cancer. This series is a collection of raw and evocative images of the experiences Reitano endured and the many people who aided him along the way.

General Elections — you’ve probably been hearing about this! — are Tuesday, Nov. 6. Guilford polling place is back at Broad Brook Community Center, formerly the Grange, polls open 10 am – 7 pm. (This year’s Phase 1 of renovations will be completed by then, so your trip to the polls can be combined with a first look at the project: New access ramp out front and entry will make wheelchair access better than ever, and restrooms are now fully accessible, among other improvements.)

You will have the opportunity to vote for Congress, Statewide offices such as Governor, County posts such as High Bailiff and State Senator, and your Windham District-1 rep to the legislature. At the town level, there is a contest for Justices of the Peace.

Last Weekend for Shoot The Moon Theater Company’s “Frankenstein” is November 2-3

The final two showings of Shoot the Moon Theater Company’s “Frankenstein” at the Hooker-Dunham Theater are at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, November 2-3.

The Brattleboro Winter Farmers’ Market will open the 2018 season on Saturday, November 3, 2018 in a new location. Having outgrown the old location, the Winter Farmers’ Market is looking forward to welcoming market-goers to the C. F. Church Building at 80 Flat St. in downtown Brattleboro. This new location offers free, convenient parking, better accessibility, and a more spacious indoor space, promising a market that is easier to navigate for customers and vendors alike.

Brattleboro VFW Post #1034 located at 40 Black Mountain Road will be having a spaghetti and homemade meatball dinner Friday Nov. 2nd. Includes a salad, garlic bread, and blueberry shortcake for dessert.Cost is $10.
Our regular menu items will also be available at their regular prices. (Burgers, wings, etc.)
Dinner will be served from 4pm – 7 pm. The public is invited to attend this meal, which will be served in the canteen like our lunches.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Emerging Artist Festival

The Vermont Jazz Center is excited to present its first annual Emerging Artists Festival on Friday evening, November 2nd in downtown Brattleboro during Gallery Walk and all day Saturday, November 3rd at the Vermont Jazz Center. This event is in collaboration with area schools and colleges, the Boys and Girls Club, Strolling of the Heifers, BrattRock, Youth Services, Gallery Walk and the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance. The VJC’s goal is to use this annual Emerging Artists Festival to cultivate a greater interest and deeper knowledge of jazz amongst younger audiences, to connect with our region’s youth and ultimately boost their attendance throughout the year. As a participatory event, VJC’s Emerging Artist Festival will break down barriers to accessing the arts, especially for the region’s young people.

Longtime friend Joe Crompton passed away under the full moon.

You know Joe if you shopped at the Co-op. He was the sausage-making meat expert in the butcher area.

You know Joe if you worked at the Co-op. He kept a constant eye on management and was a leading advocate for the union. He spent many a year trying to get better situations for employees, which paid off in recent years with a succesful union vote.

Downtown Brattleboro Valve Nut Replacement

On Wednesday, October 24, Utilities Crews will be working in the junction of lower Main Street and Canal Street. The work will begin at 10:00 pm and continue through 5:00 am Thursday morning, October 25. Traffic will be restricted in that area during the scheduled time while the Utilities Division works to replace a valve nut in the middle of the roadway.

Motorists should plan to use alternate routes during this time period.

Oct 25 Meeting About Preventing Harm to Brattleboro Residents from Opiods and other Drugs

Many people in Brattleboro are aware that opioids and other drugs harm some of our community members.  One organization that works on this problem is the Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition, or BAPC, for short. Among other things,  BAPC members help facilitate the collection of unused opioids like oxycontin, so that they can be removed from Brattleboro, and disposed of; help smokers who want to quit find the resources to do so; help local bars train their staff so that they don’t accidentally serve teenagers; teach young children how to avoid getting poisoned by pills that look like candy, and many other harm-prevention related activities.
