As a reminder, petitions for Brattleboro Town and Town School District Officers and Town Meeting Members are now available at the Town Clerk’s office. Town elections will be Tuesday, March 5 at the American Legion, and the Annual Representatives Town Meeting, Saturday, March 23 at Brattleboro Union High School.
The raiding of the Rooms & Meals tax revenue has begun. Two private organizations in town have asked for 10% of the annual Rooms & Meals local option tax revenue to be given to them. They’d like nearly $40,000 and in return they offer a vague promise to promote Brattleboro. It’s not a terrible idea, but it hasn’t been thought out much beyond asking for money.
At 12:49p we received a report that there was a large ice jam on the Whetstone Brook near Village Drive and that water was coming into the trailer park. It was determined that an ice jam, approximately 200 yards in length, was diverting the water out of the brook. Eleven homes along Village & Edgewood Drives were evacuated. There were concerns that if the ice jam dislodged it would cause a dangerous, sudden increase in the water levels downstream and for this reason we did a precautionary evacuation of Glen St and Melrose Terrace.
In conjunction with her January 2019 solo exhibition “Progressions“, we are delighted to host an artist talk with Providence-based photographer Lindsey Beal on Sunday, January 27th starting with a 1-hr talk at 4pm and followed by a closing reception with refreshments until 6pm.
Just in time for winter to really kick in, Brooks Memorial Library is pleased to have added snowshoes and adjustable poles to our catalog! They are loaned on a first-come, first-served, and are available in several sizes, from childrens’ to adult. A special waiver for each cardholder must be signed and dated before they are borrowed. The Brattleboro Selectboard faced multiple groups of unhappy citizens at Tuesday evening’s meeting. Unhappy about inspection fees, unhappy about local option sales tax, unhappy about, well… lots of things.
It was around nine o’clock when the board got to their first item of regular business. Yes, one of those meetings.

WEST BRATTLEBORO — Enough with documentaries, this month All Souls Church will screen a full-length, commercial feature film on Sunday, Jan. 27, as the next offering in its series “Looking Inward at White Power and Privilege.”
“BlackKKKlansman,” the acclaimed 2018 film directed by Spike Lee and starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, will be shown for free starting at noon and will be followed by a discussion.
Martin Luther King deserves being the only American whose birthday is celebrated with a three day holiday, but not only as the successful US civil rights movement’s leader, but even more for having been martyred confronting the American killing machine at its source, investors in military atrocities, covert violence and predatory finance.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hear their first request for an exemption from the relatively new Plastic Bag Ordinance. Zephyr Designs is making the request.
Culture Made Vermont will get lots of goodies, mileage will be certified, an EPA grant applied for, liquor permits approved, and nearly final FY20 budget thoughts presented. You can weigh in on spending Rooms & Meals taxes on promotions and the precedent it sets, or bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.
Brattleboro is transitioning to a new Smart Parking system.
Brattleboro is adding new convenience features to the parking system in response to the expressed wishes of the public. The number one concern raised last year during the Parking Survey was the need to accept credit and debit cards. The work to initiate this transition begins next week on January 22, 2019. Once the transition is complete this new equipment will allow the public to pay for parking in Brattleboro using a credit/debit card, using an app on their Smartphone, and even with traditional coinage.

During this FREE event, Actor David Millswill embark on an engaging, dramatic presentation through the journey ofDr. King, as he transforms from his early uncertainties about Civil Rights into the historic and monumental figure he became.
The program will highlight Dr. King’s, Letter from a Birmingham Jail, I Have a Dream, Promised Land, If I had Sneezed, and Early Days. Mr. Mills’ stirring presentation will take a look at both the public figure and the private man.

The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes Helen Sung and celebrates her Chamber Music America sponsored project, “Sung With Words” on Saturday, January 19th at 8:00 PM at the Vermont Jazz Center. The pianist/composer will present a new body of work that embodies the alliance of poetry and jazz and then takes it to new places. The performers in the octet are Helen Sung (piano and composition), Jason Palmer (trumpet), John Ellis (woodwinds), Carolyn Leonhart and Alina Engibaryan (Vocals), David Wong (bass), Kush Abadey (drums) and Felipe Fournier (percussion).
