Brattleboro Town School Board Dissolution and Next Steps

Because of school district consolidation under Act 46, the Brattleboro Town School District’s five-member school board was dissolved on June 30th. As of July 1st, the board of the merged district, the Windham Southeast School District (WSESD), will make policy and budget planning decisions for Academy School, Green Street School, Oak Grove School and Early Education Services, as well as the five other schools of the merged district.

Information about times and locations of WSESD meetings, along with contact information for board members, is available on WSESD Board’s page on the Supervisory Union (WSESU) website at http://www.wsesu.org under the school boards menu. Meetings will rotate between schools. The next WSESD meeting is at 6pm on July 24 at Putney Central School. The next WSESD meeting taking place in Brattleboro is scheduled for August 7 at 6pm at Academy School.


Hot Weather Advisory from the Brattleboro Fire Department

The National Weather Service is warning that hot temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s combined with high humidity levels are expected to create dangerous heat conditions Friday, Saturday & Sunday with the most oppressive conditions expected Saturday.Early morning low temperatures in the 70s will not provide much cooling.

The Brattleboro Fire Department would like to remind citizens of these few simple rules to remain safe and healthy


Movement 2019: Art from 7 Years of the Southern Vermont Dance Festival

From July 18-21, the 7th annual Southern Vermont Dance Festival (SVDF) is celebrating the breadth and beauty of movement with a four-day schedule of classes, performances, community events, and more in Brattleboro. Preparing the way is “MOVEMENT 2019,” a multi-venue installation of twelve exhibits featuring diverse movement-inspired art work. Some pieces will be for sale.


Foodworks, From Groundworks

Groundworks Collaborative is taking over the former Domino’s Pizza location at 141 Canal Street to relocate their Food Shelf from the Drop-In Center at 60 South Main. The spiffy new “warm and welcoming” spot will be called Foodworks and will allow for better access and parking.


Friday Gala Concert at the Southern Vermont Dance Festival

The Southern Vermont Dance Festival is excited to announce the Friday Gala Concert at 8 pm on Friday, July 19th at the Latchis Theater.  Artists from around the country will join us for an incredible performance, full of dancers and choreographers at the top of their field. The Gala will feature a variety of modern and contemporary dance styles that explore interesting social themes with rich, beautiful movement.

Thursday July 18th the Southern Vermont Dance Festival will present its Opening Gala Concert at 4:30pm at the Latchis Theater on 50 Main St, in Brattleboro, Vermont. This performance will involve both upbeat as well as works with more serious themes. This kick-off event to the four-day festival is perfect for dance lovers and families alike, featuring many exciting genres of dance and high quality choreography from all over the world. The festival’s choreographers have come from every corner of the country to share new and revived work! There will be works in modern, ballet, fusion dance and more!

Shore Road Building Fire

At 5:05am Central Dispatch received a call for a building fire at 25 Shore Dr. Engine 2 and Ladder 1 out of Central Station and Engine 4 out of Station 2 responded on a 1stalarm. Upon arrival at 5:13am Engine 2 reported heavy fire showing from the front of the building and ordered a 2ndalarm be struck, recalling all off duty Brattleboro Firefighters and bringing all Brattleboro apparatus to the scene. Engine 4 laid a supply line to Engine 2 from a hydrant on Eaton Ave and Engine 2 crew stretched a 2 ½” attack line, knocked down a big volume of fire from the outside, the advanced an attack line to the interior of the house. Information was quickly gathered that all of the occupants were out of the house and uninjured. Extinguishment of the fire continued by the interior crew and as more help arrived additional attack lines were stretched to help with fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 7:18am.


VFW Annual Family Outing Sunday July 28th. Public Welcome!

The Brattleboro VFW Post #1034 located at 40 Black Mountain Road will be hosting their annual family outing Sunday, July 28th. A $20 ticket will enter you for a chance to win money. The meal will be 1/2 BBQ chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob, and a roll. The $20 cost will also cover entry to the dance featuring the Playin’ Possum Band.


VFW $6 Lunch Specials open to the Public 7-15 to 7-19

The Brattleboro VFW located at 40 Black Mountain Road is open to the public for lunch. Lunch is served Mon-Fri from 11:30 – 1:30. Specials listed below are only $6 a plate. Hand made burger, fries, sweet potato fries, wings, onion rings, soups and sandwiches are also available. Take outs available by calling 257-0438


Hinesburg Road Reopened

At 2:30 on Friday, July 12, Hinesburg Road has been reopened to regular traffic. The box culvert has been installed and there is still some work to be done at the site next week. While the rest of the work is completed, there will be one lane, alternating traffic in the area of 402 Hinesburg Road.


Brattleboro Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes Due

The taxpayers of the Town of Brattleboro are hereby notified and warned that Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes assessed upon the Grand List of 2019 are now due and payable to the Town Treasurer at the Treasurer’s Office in the Brattleboro Municipal Center, 230 Main Street, Suite 111, Brattleboro, Vermont, in four equal installments as follows:

Public Officials Can’t Block Critics From Official Social Media Accounts

You may have read that courts ruled that Trump, using a Twitter account for official, open government purposes, cannot block people based on the views they express. This applies to all public officials, not just Trump. It’s a first amendment issue.

Members of the Selectboard and elected Representative Town Meeting reps should take notice and proceed with caution.


You Can Help Build a Better Block in Downtown Brattleboro!

As part of the Downtown Design Plan, the Brattleboro Planning Commission is accepting proposals for Better Block projects to be designed and built by community members. The Planning Commission will select three temporary projects to be installed September 20-22 in downtown.

Better Block projects could include pop-up shops or eateries, art displays or performances, spaces for games or excercise, improvements to sidewalks or crosswalks, bike lanes or parking, outdoor seating or reading areas, streetscaping and landscaping, changes to buiding facades, etc.
