Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present a contemporary folk singer/songwriter twin bill with Antje Duvekot and Mark Erelli at Next Stage on Friday, February 11 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 advance / $24 door / $5 livestream.

Vinson/ACLU Files Lawsuit Against VT For Restricting Online Speech in Brattleboro

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Brattleboro resident and Black Lives Matter supporter Isabel Vinson filed a federal lawsuit today challenging a Vermont law that prohibits “disturbing peace by use of telephone or other electronic communications.” Vinson was criminally cited by the Brattleboro Police Department in June 2020 for her online criticism of a local business owner’s derogatory Facebook posts about the Black Lives Matter movement.

The lawsuit asserts that the law at issue, 13 V.S.A. § 1027, unconstitutionally restricts online speech. Vinson is asking the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont to declare that the statute violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution and to issue an injunction prohibiting its enforcement going forward.

The legal voters of the Windham Southeast School District, including the towns of Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, and Putney are hereby notified and warned to meet as follows. Polls will be open in Brattleboro at the American Legion, 32 Linden Street, Brattleboro, Vermont 05301 (between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.); in Dummerston at the Dummerston Town Office, 1523 Middle Road, Dummerston, Vermont 05346 (between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.); in Guilford a drive-through at the Guilford Central School, 374 School Road, Guilford, Vermont 05301 (between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.); and Putney at the Putney Fire Station, 21 Carl Snyder Drive, Putney, VT 05346 (between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.) on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 to vote by Australian ballot on the following articles.

1916 Tech Mystery in Downtown Brattleboro

As I sometimes do, I was reading the old newspapers of Brattleboro and came across this little bit of tech news from 1916 in the Phoenix. It’s a story of a mysterious sound that was interfering with a downtown Brattleboro business.  Vaughan & Burnett had a jewelry store on Main Street and were innovators in that they installed special equipment to accurately set clocks and watches.

How A Book Led Me To Release My First Album

I released an album.

“But Chris, you aren’t a musician and don’t play in any bands.” Well, yes, technically that’s true, but let me explain.

Last year I read a book called “Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983 and 1984” by Duane Tudahl. The author goes day by day through studio logs and band member’s recollections and notes of every recording, rehearsal, and performance by Prince and his band the Revolution.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – FY23 Budget Approval & Zoom RTM

The Brattleboro Selectboard approved an FY23 budget to send to Representative Town Meeting. They also warned that meeting, so representatives will get to vote on the budget and other items. 

There was a bit of discussion about the value of holding Representative Town Meeting once again by Zoom, but the option to do it that way was approved unanimously.

No Challengers For Brattleboro Selectboard

Everyone in Brattleboro who planned on running for Selectboard has returned petitions to the Brattleboro Town Clerk’s office. The big surprise this year? No surprises at all. All the names are familiar incumbents.

Daniel Quipp will run for a three year seat. Jessica Gelter and Tim Wessel will run for one year seats.

Politics Before Science

There was a time when scientists would err on the side of caution and make decisions based on the best outcome for the most people. In the case of how long to isolate or quarantine after a positive test for COVD-19, the CDC has caved-in to politics and shortened the isolation period to five days.

If you look at the science and try to examine all of the available information it is clear that five days is not enough to provide safety to people you come in contact with. The CDC does suggest that after five days of isolation an infected person get re-tested and then wear a mask for another five days. That is almost a concession to the fact that there is a high likelihood they can transmit the virus beyond five days.
