Last Autumn (2021), when most Vermont residents were able to enjoy having a roof over their heads to stay warm and dry underneath, a comfortable bed to sleep in, nourishing daily meals to eat and proper hydration with which to attempt to stay healthy, Brenda Siegel and others were holding vigil on the steps of the State House in Montpelier on behalf of those most in need who live without such means.
For my part, I joined them there for a single evening and it wasn’t easy or fun by any means. They did so for 27 long days and nights until the governor and his reluctant administration finally relented to their demands.
A light agenda awaits the Brattleboro Selectboard at their first meeting in September – accept grant money for bike lanes, assist Windham & Windsor Trust, and help out DV Fiber.
You can add weight by bringing up other matters not on the agenda during public participation.

Next Stage Arts and the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community present an evening of global Hebrew and Jewish music with Yamma Ensemble on Friday, September 16th at 7:30 p.m. at Next Stage Arts, 15 Kimball Hill Road, in Putney, VT.
“Masters of their craft, Yamma Ensemble reflects the perfect balance between respect for tradition and making the music innovative,” says Keith Marks, Executive Director of Next Stage Arts. “Israel is a melting pot of traditions from the Jewish diaspora living all over the world for over 2,000 years. Brenda Siegel is doing a good job of complaining about the State Legislature because they did not prepare ahead of time for running out of funds for housing assistance.
In January some new State Legisltors will be sworn in, but that might not be fast enough.
Another SHOPPING DAY (no donations accepted) at Swap Shop at WSWMD on Old Ferry Road, Brattleboro on Saturday, September 3, 8:30 am to noon. ALL ITEMS ARE FREE.

Beginning Tuesday, September 6, All States Construction (a contractor of the town) will be milling and paving in the area along South Main Street. This work is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.
The streets being paved include South Main Street (from Canal Street to Old Guilford Road), Estabrook Street, Lawrence Street, Valgar Street, Cotton Mill Hill (between the Cotton Mill Complex and Route 142) and Old Guilford Road (from South Main Street to University Way). Crews will be working between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. There will be no on-street parking during this project and motorists should expect delays in the area and seek alternate routes.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Brattleboro Cemetery Committee is established for the purpose of advising the Selectboard in matters of care and maintenance of all Town owned cemeteries.
It establishes policies, rules and regulations for operation of the cemeteries; sets prices for services provided; lays out plots, drives and paths and prices for burial plots. No policy making decision of the Committee is valid unless approved by the Selectboard.

If you want some insight into the problems that current campaign finance laws create, the Vermont Democratic primary for the U.S. House may prove instructive. Windham County Senator Becca Balint and Lt. Governor Mollie Gray squared off in what proved to be a lopsided race. Balint handily defeated Gray. If Balint wins the general election she will be the first woman and first openly gay member of Vermont’s congressional delegation.
According to VT Digger, ” …LGBTQ Victory Fund, which spent just shy of $1 million on Balint’s behalf in the race, had recently benefited from a $1.1 million donation from Nishad Singh, a top executive at the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The political action committee’s financial disclosures make clear that the lion’s share of the outside spending supporting Balint’s run came from Singh’s donation.”
