Basin Farm Fire Recovery Effort

We, at the Basin Farm, Westminster, Vermont want to announce the creation of the Basin Farm Fire Relief Effort. Although we, Niflaah and I, no longer live at Basin Farm we are still very much connected to our friends circumstances there. Already many of our friends and former customers of our Harmony Parking Lot Common Loaf Bakery have responded with aid and sympathy.

Remembering John Wessel

I just learned that John Wessel passed away early Tuesday.

I met John through the Estey Organ Museum. He had worked at the Estey Organ Company in the pipe organ department, lived in Esteyville, and continued to build and restore organs after the company closed.

He would drop by the museum often, usually with some helpful criticism of how things were being done or displayed. He caught some errors for us, helped with events, attended everything, and was featured in the museum newsletter. He also helped repair organs and advise the museum on organs in the collection. He participated in round table discussions with other former employees. He also told some amazing stories.

Health Care Reform And You: The Patient-Centered Medical Home

You and the Patient-Centered Medical Home: What is it? How does it affect you?

These are open Putney community sessions focusing on how health care reform in Vermont is affecting the way in which health care services are organized and delivered. Come learn about how the Vermont Blueprint for Health, the statewide initiative designed to improve the health of Vermonters, is using a model for health care delivery called the “Patient-Centered Medical Home”, or “PCMH” for short to enhance the way your health care is managed.

Learn what a PCMH is and what your rights are as a patient receiving care in a PCMH.  Both medical offices in Putney, HeartSong Health in Community and Putney Family Health Care, are now certified PCMHs, all of the BMH medical practices either have become certified as PCMHs or are in the process of becoming certified.   If you receive care in Putney, you are now part of a PCMH.  If you receive care in a BMH practice in Brattleboro, you are, or will soon be, part of a PCMH.  Make sure that you know what this means for you and your family.

Remember The Critters

Please remeber to look out for your, and your neighbors, animals in the coming storm.   No animal should be teathered outside this time of year.  Remember, drinking water for barn animals can freeze.

Keep your eyes open for the critters.

Thanks.

Happy New Year !

Hoping everyone has a new year filled with peace of mind, contentment, good health and many quiet joys.

Let’s all treat our fellow human beings with kindness, compassion and respect.

Happy 2014!!

Biologic Wellness Center Open for January Gallery Walk

Biologic Wellness Center will be hosting a photography exhibit and open house, during Gallery Walk, on Friday, January 3rd. Stop by our space on the ground floor of the Merchant’s Bank Building. Meet the featured exhibitor, Brattleboro resident, Dave Eagle, and enjoy his creative, edgy photographs. He describes himself as “a father, writer, photographer, irritable tech guy, forklift operator, ironist, socialist gubernatorial candidate, and a proponent of the Oxford comma.” Dave’s images, occurring at the “intersection of growth and decay,” remind the viewer that technological advance is fleeting and human triumph only temporary. This stunning, thought-provoking exhibit is on display throughout January.

Showing Someone Around Brattleboro?

I’ve lived here for 15 years. I know there are so many amazing things about the Brattleboro area, but fear that like most folks, I’ve become blind to some of them due to familiarity.

I have a friend from out of town coming for a week.  Suggestions on local must-do’s? Hidden gems? Things I may have forgotten we have?

I’ve got local restaurants covered.  We’ll definitely take in a movie at the Latchis.  Visiting the Brattleboro Museum is on the agenda. If the weather cooperates, we’ll hike the Retreat trails and maybe Fort Dummer.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Name of Store With $50 Eyeglasses?

I have a prescription and am now trying to remember the name of this store in or near Colony Mill in Keene, NH where I once bought glasses for $50. Does anyone know if this store still exists, and if yes, its name and/or location?

Or, any other place for cheap prescription glasses.
Thanks.

Winter Solstice 2013

The winter solstice this year is on December 21st st 12:11 PM EST. Although some might think it came early, the date and time shown is when it officially starts.  The only thing I like about winter besides Christmas is the night sky with all the bright stars and constellations that can be seen like Orion and Sirius the Dog Star, for example.
