Steven Strong, founder of one of the first solar companies in the United States and an acclaimed industry leader and innovator, will speak at the Hooker-Dunham Theater, 139 Main Street in downtown Brattleboro on Friday, September 11 at 7:00 pm.

Strong’s talk will assess the current state of solar in this country, how we reached this point, and what needs to be done in the future to make solar mainstream. It will cover all aspects of solar, from individual residences to large-scale utility solar plants.

There is a suggested donation of $10 for the talk. Light refreshments will be provided.

Local residents will have a chance to learn about becoming a nationally Board Certified Coach (BCC) as The Synthesis Center introduces its psychosynthesis classes in Brattleboro this summer. On Wednesday, July 22nd at 6:30 p.m., there will be a free presentation at the The Synthesis Center’s regional office at 73 Main Street in Brattleboro. A follow up session is scheduled for August 23rd.

Psychosynthesis is distinctive for blending Western psychology with Eastern spiritual traditions, and it has long been applied in the fields of counseling, education and the helping professions as a tool for self development. More recently, the Center has introduced this method to the emerging field of life coaching, offering tools and applied practices for creating life change.

Plans are in the works for a late September (25-27) reunion when Landmark College celebrates its 30th year. This is the institution that since 1985 has occupied the former Windham campus. The dates are during foliage season, so make hotel/motel reservations soon.

The Windham Region- The Six College Collaborative formerly known as The Windham Higher Education Cooperative recently launched their very own website www.sixcolleges.com featuring local paid internship opportunities for college students, information about cross registration amongst the six participating colleges as well as community offerings at the various college campuses. Normally, one doesn’t expect a state board of education to oppose federal education policy.  As we’ve long been told, unless states comply with federal standards, the feds will cut off the money.  But last week, the Vermont State Board of Education issued a resolution suspending the use of the new Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) standardized tests as a means of evaluating schools and students.  The resolution went further, calling on Congress and the Obama Administration to make substantial changes to No Child Left Behind, the Bush-era legislation that has been the chief driver behind today’s testing regime.

Many years ago I was employed by a prestigious institute, which partnered with an esteemed university, to visit elementary schools across Vermont (all names withheld) and closely observe classrooms in action. There was a scoring form used, the rubrics were primarily oriented towards engagement, involvement, inspiration, and critical thinking.

One classroom I visited was vaunted in advance as a high scoring classroom on standardized tests, the teacher a veteran known for their effectiveness. This was an early ed room, first or second grade. The teacher was brusque, professional, their M.O. seemed to be some kind of tough love. My work began as usual with the start of the day– sessions lasted a whole day– our role was akin to the Star Trek prime directive, observing only, being careful to not interfere.
