Brattleboro Women’s Chorus Concerts: Keep Hope Alive

The Brattleboro Women’s Chorus will present their annual fall concerts, “Keep Hope Alive,” on November 17 and 18 at The Brick Church (formerly the Baptist Church). Joining the eighty women and director Becky Graber will be Cathy Martin on piano, Julian McBrowne on bass, and Lisa McCormick on guitar and with her ukulele orchestra.

Several songs will feature arrangements by local musicians – Andy Davis’s four-part arrangement of “Let the Life I’ve Lived” and Peter Amidon’s “Crossing the Bar.” Graber arranged the wondrous song by India Arie, “I Am Light.”

‘Smart Meters’ and Cell Phones

Smart meters use basically the same wireless technology as cell phones.

The FCC sets radiation standards, with which all manufacturers of smart meters must comply.

The frequency of cell phone radiation corresponds to a wavelength of approximately one foot. This wavelength is thousands of times larger than structures in the brain responsible for mental processes, and so claims that wireless radiation can cause maladies such as “dizziness” or “memory loss” are absurd.

A Drawing Season

We have 5 spots left in A Drawing Season, a “low-residency” drawing study from January to March 2019. With a mix of private lessons, small group workshops and in-studio drawing time you can re-learn drawing as a natural and connective activity. Children draw and are world makers when they do. As adults we, semi-consciously, agree to draw what something looks like rather than our experience of it. They are not the same thing!

Susan McDormand Exhibit Opening on Nov. 10

West Brattleboro, Vt. — “The Right Balance,” an exhibit of paintings by Guilford artist Susan McDormand, is showing through December in the foyer and other gallery spaces at All Souls Church UU (ASC). The public is invited to meet the artist and gain insights into her work at an artist’s reception on Saturday, November 10, from 2 to 4 pm.

McDormand began painting at the River Gallery School in Brattleboro more than 20 years ago. “Ric Campman and Lydia Thomson inspired and encouraged me. Today I continue to paint in oils, on beautiful papers, often implementing pencil and pastel. As the piece develops, I begin to have a mirror . . . it seems to be about intuition, color, and a language being written. For me, painting is so much about blending movements of color together.” The work reflects her goal of creating harmony in life as well as in artistic expression.

“Charles Henry’s Final Curtain” Original Musical Premieres at Main Street Arts

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – On the heels of its big splash productions of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Jesus Christ Superstar and its upcoming winter production of Chicago, Main Street Arts is mining into its own creative resources closer to home to offer an original, brand-new production opening Friday, Nov. 9 for a two-weekend run.
The world premiere of Charles Henry’s Final Curtain, an old-fashioned vaudeville musical, is a celebration of the creative spirit of a Vermont native whose own creativity took him all over the state with his performing family, leaving a legacy of entertainment and painted theater curtains in at least 16 towns.

Halloween Costumes 2018

One of the casualties of our move away from Cedar Street is that we can no longer provide you with the full report on Brattleboro halloween costumes as we’ve done before. I’m not happy about it. I loved the yearly lists of creative output by our younger residents.

It’s going to be up to you as individuals to make note of the costumes this year, and here’s your space to do it. If you see anything wild or wonderful, let us all know.

VCP Artist Talk: Paul Reitano

(Free & open to the public)

Please join the Vermont Center for Photography for a public artist talk with MA-based photographer, Paul Reitano, in conjunction with his solo exhibition “Thrive: The Overcome Project”. Paul’s photographic series that will be on display for the month of November stemmed from his personal battle – and eventual success story – with cancer. This series is a collection of raw and evocative images of the experiences Reitano endured and the many people who aided him along the way.
