“Alice,” a Musical Play, opens the fifth season at Guilford Center Stage, on April 26-28, at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford. The work is performed as a tribute to an iconic 1978 outdoor production in Guilford. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. Tickets are $12 general admission.
David Rohn was born in Chicago in 1934 and grew up in the small town of Ludington, along the shore of Lake Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan College of Architecture and Design and stepped into a creative life richly lived as cartoonist, puppeteer, printmaker, teacher and painter.
Running parallel to his explorations in abstract painting and printmaking, and during his tenure at Windham College in Putney, Vermont, in the mid-1960s and ’70s, David’s watercolor painting gave relief from the more formal demands and cultural mandates of artistic invention and novelty of non-figurative oil painting. The delicate washes and expansive passages of color represent liberation from an art world of expectation and judgement. His modest still-lifes are deceptively loose and easy, and we’re comforted by the associations we bring to his unassuming and familiar scenes.
When the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris burned yesterday, it was more than a religious icon that was lost. For workers, women, artists, tourists, the city of Paris and all of France, Notre Dame was both monument and living symbol of human aspiration and French spirit.
Notre Dame has always been remembered for the prodigious labors of the generations of workmen and artisans who created it. It was ordinary people who built it and, in large part, it is their legacy that went up in flames.

West Brattleboro, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford’s tenth annual celebration of Women in Music begins at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, and salutes Katherine Faulkner “Kay” Swift (1897-1993). She was a classically trained composer who became George Gershwin’s trusted musical advisor and companion. After Gershwin (1898-1937) encouraged her to compose popular music, Swift became the first woman to write a hit Broadway musical, “Fine and Dandy” (1930), now the borrowed title for FOMAG’s gala.
Some of both genres of music will be performed at this house-concert benefit for FOMAG’s current 53rd season. The program opens with a piano transcription of the Overture to “Fine and Dandy,” performed by Virginia Eskin, and later includes Swift’s Theme and Variations for Piano and Cello, performed with cellist Rebecca Hartka. Eskin will also accompany several songs from Swift’s musical theater and film scores featuring vocals by Jessica Gelter and Tony Grobe.
Wheelhouse Clay Center recently opened at 48 Harmony Place in downtown Brattleboro. It’s the vision of two local potters and former members of Brattleboro Clayworks, Shari Zabriskie and Teta Hilsdon.
Wheelhouse’s four basic offerings are rentals for potters, classes, special events, and a gallery. As classes begin to roll out, Teta Hilsdon is offering one scholarship to her Beginner Wheel Throwing class, an 8-week course covering the basics of wheel throwing technique, trimming, decorating, and glazing.

Company of Muses announces May 1, 2019 is the deadline to apply for scholarships for summer sessions at the Brattleboro School of Dance. Applications can be found at www.companyofmuses.org.
Funds are available for dancers of all ages and abilities so long as the family can demonstrate need according to federal financial assistance guidelines. The amount of assistance available is determined by these guidelines, as well as the number of applicants.
Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of cutting edge fiddle and cello explorations of Scottish, Celtic and global music by Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas at Next Stage on Thursday, April 11 at 7:30 pm. What better way to celebrate the coming of spring than a Bayou-themed dance party with three local dance bands! Everyone is invited on Sunday, April 7 from 5:00-8:00 pm to the Vermont Jazz Center for music hailing from the Louisiana Bayou to the streets of Brazil and from points all over the Afro-Creole culture sphere. Featured will be two of Brattleboro’s signature New Orleans roots music ensembles, Bayou X and the Celebration Brass Band, with a special guest appearance by SOVESA, the Vermont Jazz Center Samba Ensemble. The event is a benefit for the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus (and it happens to be our director, Becky Graber’s, birthday).
Next Stage is excited to present our annual online auction fundraiser for 2019! The theme this year is Bucket List Adventures and 100% the funds raised through your generous participation in the auction will be deployed to offset direct costs of Next Stage programming.

Next Stage Arts Project will host its annual Gala Benefit Dance Party, to benefit Next Stage programming, featuring the Afro-Celtic Funk band Soulsha on Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 pm. The party will include an online auction, great food and a beer and wine cash bar. Ticket price includes dinner by Smokin’ Bowls.
Soulsha is a party, a revolution, and an adventure through different traditions. The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes Helen Sung and celebrates her Chamber Music America sponsored suite, “Sung With Words” on Saturday, March 30th at 8:00 PM at the Vermont Jazz Center. This show is a rescheduled date from a snowed out event on January 19, 2019. The pianist/composer will present a project that embodies the alliance of poetry and jazz and then takes it to new places. The performers in the octet are Helen Sung (piano and composition), Jason Palmer (trumpet), John Ellis (woodwinds), Charenée Wade and Carolyn Leonhart (vocals), Rick Rosato (bass), Adam Cruz (drums) and Samuel Torres (percussion).
Lately I’ve noticed that a great many commentators on television and radio feel obliged to begin every answer to every question with the word “so.” For example, the answer to “What did President Trump mean by his latest tweet?” might be “So, no one knows what is going on in the mind of Donald Trump, but….” The problem with this usage is that it is both unnecessary and incorrect.
There are many correct uses of the word “so.”
SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – The cast is set, rehearsals are going full blast and tickets are on sale for Main Street Arts’ production of Chicago, which opens Thursday, Mar. 28 at the Bellows Falls Opera House for a two-weekend run.
The cast of the Jazz-age musical set in the Windy City’s Cook County jail includes Kyla White as the imprisoned Roxie Hart and Izzy Serebrov as the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn, who works for her release by making the tabloids sympathetic to her plight.
