Brattleboro Celebrates First Indigenous Peoples Day

It’s not often that something happens that cries out to be corrected and then, in a matter of days, it is.  I’m not talking about Vermont’s GMO law either (which Congress mooted within the month) – no, I’m talking about Indigenous Peoples Day which has been proposed, here and elsewhere, as a less racist and more fair alternative to traditional Columbus Day.  Unfortunately, honoring native American people was not something the Selectboard could get its collective mind around and Indigenous Peoples Day lost here in Brattleboro by a vote of 2-3.  But just when you thought all was lost, along comes Governor Shumlin with a state-wide proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day, signed, sealed, and delivered.  What do you know, we get to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day after

To the Parents of the Children I Nearly Killed Tonight

Hey, y’know what time of the year it is?

OCTOBER.

This means it gets dark out..

This means when your children* are dressed in dark colors I can’t see them, especially when there’s lots of traffic coming the other way with their headlights on, and your children are standing by the side of the road where there’s no streetlight.

Now, obviously your children are not maimed or dead – EVEN THOUGH THEY DARTED INTO THE ROAD – because my headlights picked up their movement at the last possible second.

Weekend Creativity Series – Storyboarding

Storyboarding was developed to a high art form by Walt Disney and his team of artists. He found that by arranging little drawings that correspond to all key points in an animated script, he and his animators could pre-visualize a cartoon before making it.

This was important for two reasons. One – animation was time consuming and expensive, and the better it was planned in advance, costs could be kept under control. Having a frame by frame guide to what should be done helped keep everyone on track and within budget (more or less.)

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Chico Freeman Plus+tet

Although Freeman moved to NY from Chicago in the mid-1970s, his strong roots, family ties and openness to a variety of musical styles continue to link him to the Windy City. He embodies the Chicago sound – his playing is saturated with the history of that city’s deep, musical heritage. Freeman’s tone is breathy and full, he is open-minded and emphasizes creativity as well as precision; he approaches every tune as if his life depends on it.

Random Robot Round-Up Fall 2016

Time for another random robot round-up, in which we take another snapshot of the progress of our future friends and overlords.

Each of the following is a specific robot in development, but that’s not the best way to think about these things. It’s better to think of each of these studies as part of a greater whole. That is, anything one of them can do now, all can potentially be capable of in the future. Keep that in mind as you read about monkey-controlled robot armies, flaming ping pong balls, and soft micro robots.

Chimera – A Physical and Ethereal Presence

(huffingtonpost.co.uk) Story: An exhibition entitled Slow currently on show at the China Exchange in the heart of London’s Chinatown. It’s a commission from an arts initiative called Shaire, based in London, Singapore and Beijing in which interdisciplinary groups are invited to explore the broad theme of nature. The most eye-catching exhibit in Slow is by the internationally acclaimed American sculptor, Brattleboro local, Aaron Distler. [Aaron Distler is the son of Arlene Distler, Brattleboro’s longtime art critic.]  It comprises what looks at first like a large caterpillar but, in fact, is a Chimera, a mythical fire-eating dragon (above) that supposedly vanishes when you look at it. So it has both a physical and ethereal presence about it.
