44th Christmas at Christ Church: “O, Happy Yule!”

Friends of Music at Guilford’s 44th annual holiday program at Christ Church, the iconic New England landmark along Rt. 5 in Guilford, Vt., is set for December 16 and 17. Performances on Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 4:00 p.m. will include vocal music, instrumental interludes, a holiday story, and a brief carol sing, the  traditional format. The “O, Happy Yule!” subtitle refers to this season’s thematic choice of Music from the British Isles.

The Guilford Chamber Singers, under the direction of Tom Baehr for a fifth season, present ten a cappella seasonal songs from England, Ireland, and Wales. These span several centuries and are interspersed with instrumental selections played by the Guilford Chamber Players under the direction of Amy Cann.

Making Connections Conference Welcomes Stern Center Professional

Brattleboro, VT- On November 5, the Brattleboro Area Early Childhood Educators hosted the Making Connections Conference at Brattleboro Retreat. Professional learning providers from around the state shared their expertise through workshops covering a variety of topics, thereby enhancing the knowledge of roughly 80 Vermont early childhood providers and educators. Funded by the generous support of the Turrell Fund, Karen Rodgers, a Speech Language Pathologist at the Stern Center for Language and Learning, was able to provide two valuable workshops to these educators.

First Wednesdays at Brooks Library: How William Carlos Williams Changed Poetry

UVM professor Huck Gutman will look at the work and legacy of poet William Carlos Williams in a talk at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro on December 7 at 7 pm. His talk, “William Carlos Williams: America’s Most Revolutionary Twentieth Century Poet,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. Gutman’s talk will consider how Williams changed American and world poetry forever by creating a new poetic language and new poetic forms.

Huck Gutman is Professor of English at the University of Vermont, where he teaches courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American poetry, and in modern poetry in translation. A former Chair of the English Department, he has twice taught abroad as a Fulbright Fellow. He has written or edited four books, and has been a regular political columnist for major newspapers abroad.  He has returned to teaching at UVM after six years in Washington, where he served as Chief of Staff to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Fake News Isn’t The Problem. We Are For Falling For It.

Fake news isn’t the ailment. It’s the symptom.

The problem is education. We’ve tolerated a slow slide in the quality of education over the last few decades, leaving many of our fellow citizens without the basic skills required to participate in or understand the world around them, making them vulnerable to manipulation and misdirection.

Combine that with a dizzying array of media choices and some intentional confusion injected into the system and you have a recipe for poor decision making at multiple levels. At the very least, it leaves a substantial portion of the population at the whim of whatever rumors float their way.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present Darol Anger’s 5th Annual Keepin’ It In The Fam Holiday Show at Next Stage on Friday, December 2 at 7:30 pm. In addition to fiddler Darol Anger, the concert features banjoist Tony Trischka, singer/songwriter Emy Phelps, bassist Ethan Jodziewicz and guitarist Grant Gordy.

To celebrate the holidays, Darol Anger and Emy Phelps have gathered some of the country’s best string musicians for an evening of mythical, magical, musical mayhem. The multigenerational musical experience focuses on the spirit of midwinter and the turning of the year. Anger has a long history of organizing holiday shows, from Windham Hill Winter Solstice Concerts through Newgrange to Yulegrass, and his old friend and musical colleague, banjo genius Tony Trischka, will be on board as this year’s very most special guest. Bassist and Edgar Meyer protege Ethan Jodziewicz (Sierra Hull) and guitar wizard Grant Gordy (David Grisman Quintet) round out the band.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents its Annual Big Band Gala- A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald f. vocalist Wanda Houston

Vermont Jazz Center Big Band Gala with guest vocalist Wanda Houston Celebrates the Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Raises Money for Scholarship Fund

The Vermont Jazz Center will present its annual big band swing gala on Friday, December 2nd at 8:00 PM paying tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, one of the greatest jazz singers in history. The performance will celebrate Fitzgerald’s centennial birthday anniversary by featuring arrangements she performed with Count Basie, Duke Ellington and others. All proceeds will support the VJC’s Scholarship Program. The VJC Big Band is comprised of area professionals, is led by music director Rob Freeberg and administrated by band manager Sherm Fox. Acclaimed vocalist Wanda Houston will front the band for this gala performance, an annual concert that has evolved into one of the VJC’s most popular events.

WKVT Hosts “A Call To Action” Forum on Internet Safety, Dec. 1

WKVT Radio will present a live broadcast of a public forum on the topic of Internet Safety from 11:00am to 1:00pm on Thursday, December 1 in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Brattleboro Municipal Center. 

Panelists will include Karen Bates, Information Specialist for the Vermont Department of Public Safety, Detective Erik Johnson of the Brattleboro Police Department and officials from area banks and schools. 

Members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions or share information during the broadcast, which will be moderated by WKVT hosts Peter “Fish” Case and Chris Lenois.
