  • My vote wasn't counted

As expected, and for the first time in my life as a voter, some of my votes were not counted.

As I expressed to the Charter Change Committee, Town Clerk, Town Meeting Reps, State Reps and Secretary of State, I was worried that the new charter change would mean that my write-in votes might be thrown away.

I wrote in Martha O’Connor for a District 3 rep as a test. I saw her at the polls, told her I wrote her in, asked her to go register with the Town Clerk who was just feet away, reminded her that my vote wouldn’t be counted if she failed to register, and told the Town Clerk that I had just done this and hoped that O’Connor would be listed so my vote would indeed be counted.

She chose not to register and my vote was denied. There is no vote for Martha O’Connor in the above list, but there is a ballot with a vote for her. It’s as if no one voted for her at all, but that’s not true. She got a vote.

Any one else cast votes that were not recorded?

    • a non vote

I wrote in Ian Bigelow for the 3 year Selectboard seat on an early ballot. My vote didn’t count.

      • Write-In For Ian Bigelow

Last I heard (which, admittedly, was some time ago), Ian Bigelow did not live in Brattleboro. He’s well-known about town and has in the past received a handful of write-ins for the Selectboard, but I believe it’s been some time since he’s been a resident.

    • Charter Change on Write-Ins

If you write someone’s name in for elected Town Meeting Representative, it’s best to talk with them first to ascertain if they are interested in serving.

Only if they actually decided to serve will votes written in for them be counted, because according to the new charter, a write-in candidate must notify the Town Clerk before the polls close on the day of voting in order for votes cast for them to be counted.

So if you want your write-in vote to count, make sure your candidate has either already let the Town Clerk know of their candidacy, or plans to do so before the polls close.
