A number of people I know are very concerned that Trump might be elected. I have a suggestion to take the wind out of his sails and make his service to the nation unnecessary.
Trump’s promise is to “make America great again.” If everyone steps up, works hard, and makes America great again before Election Day, he won’t be needed. As an added bonus, the newly re-greatized nation would remain that way, with Clinton maintaining the new status quo.
Here’s how I’d do it:
Deal with climate change.
Stop torturing Chelsea Manning.
Police stop killing unarmed, cooperative black men and women.
Drop charges against Edward Snowden.
Give everyone a guaranteed minimum income.
Offer universal single payer health care.
Stop wasting resources on wars.
Stop spying on everything innocent people do.
Relax. Be nice to others. Help people.
End corporations and big donors making laws to their own benefit.
…
Did I forget anything?
We'll soon see what we're made of
For what it’s worth…I don’t think Trump will win…this time. If we continue on our trajectory of adoring shiny things and valuing fame over substance..and of dumbing down and pumping up…that day will come, and it may not be far off.
Trump represents a faction embedded within our history. He’s an incarnation of Custer, bluster and false bravado, and not fundamentally opposed to the idea of decimating a race of people that are seen as thwarting his goals. He also seems an heir to the energies of the anti-abolitionist movement, a purveyor of the Mudsill theory, in modern terms.
There were many Confederates caught up in the madness, Westward pioneers as well, who may not have been inherently hateful, but were swept along by the tides of ‘progress’. Fortunately ‘our better angels’ prevailed, and my hunch is that they will again. But judging by the behavior of the media, the content of mass entertainment, the denigration of workers rights, currents of anti-intellectualism, ignorance of history, a sense of expendability of the environment and diverse species… We are hardly out of the woods.
