Today in Brattleboro, in 1881, the Phoenix reported:
Again we are reminded that one of the worst nuisances is the man who is up at early dawn, making his lawn mower ziz, ziz, rasping the whiskers off the lawn.
I found this interesting, in that it seems to be a frequent, modern-day occurrence as well.
It doesn’t seem to matter that it is early in the day. It doesn’t matter that it is a weekend, or a holiday. If it is a nice day outside, someone will start up a motorized device to hack away at nature.
In the past few days we’ve been treated to early morning sounds of chainsaws and branch cutting, multiple gas-powered lawn mowings, a complete tree cutting and chopping, and airgun hammering, to name a few. I suppose it helps drown out the sound of traffic.
Personally, I try to schedule noisy work for just a bit later in the day. If I have to use something loud, I wait until late morning and try to keep it to a minimum. I also switched to using a push mower to keep the noise down. But that’s just me.
I know from working for lawn care and landscaping businesses in Florida that starting early is important when there is a lot of work to be done, so the hired businesses can be somewhat forgiven. But what of the neighbors who assume everyone else rises with them?
Is the ziz, ziz still an issue in 2014?
