I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of May 8th

I-91
All traffic (northbound and southbound) has been shifted onto the new bridge structure! Southbound traffic will be limited to one 12’ wide lane as construction activities continue for the southbound roadway.
Single lane and shoulder closures for northbound traffic throughout the project limits will be installed as needed for construction activities. Please follow advanced warning signs.

Route 30
The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Bridge demolition over Route 30 will begin May 8th, starting with the removal of the concrete/asphalt deck. In the interest of public safety, RT 30 below I-91 will be closed during daytime hours (6am – 7pm) for two or three days this week. Traffic will be detoured accordingly. Please follow advanced warning signs and message boards. A similar closure will be performed late May/early June to remove the steel superstructure.

Upper Dummerston Road
Upper Dummerston may be reduced to a single lane intermittently in order to complete the old bridge substructure demolition. Flaggers will regulate traffic within the work zone.

West River Trail
The West River Trail is open. There are intersections between construction access and the trail path, and users should exercise extreme caution at these intersections. As an additional safety precaution, users of the West River Trail are reminded to keep pets on a leash in this area. During bridge demolition above the trail, personnel will be stationed to provide warning to pedestrians when work is occurring overhead.

West River
During bridge demolition above the West River, the navigable waterway will be controlled through the use of buoys or safety monitor. Please follow the advanced warning accordingly.

Text Alert System
A text alert system for the Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project makes it possible to receive text notifications of:
• Interstate ramp closings,
• Closings of Upper Dummerston Road
• Closings of VT Route 30 (but not single lane closings of RT 30), and

Continue concrete deck removal of the main bridge over the West River, RT 30, and the West River Trail.
Two lanes of traffic in both directions on the new bridge is expected late June, 2017.
Project completion is anticipated by the end of Fall, 2017.

Trail Talks
The next trail talk has not yet been scheduled.

  • bridge speed limit northbound

I am constantly being passed by northbound traffic going 70 MPH+ on the new bridge. Is the limit still 50 or isn’t it?

    • Pretty sure it is 65

Pretty sure it is full speed – 65mph, unless they put out signs and are slowing folks for some reason.

I think quite a few locals are confused by this – whenever I cross there are people going both 50 and 70. 50 is nice for taking in the view from the bridge.

      • speeding on the bridge

So…the 50MPH speed limit signs as well as the signs threatening double fines are not relevant? When will they be removed?

      • Active workmen and vehicles

Heading up to Exit 3 it’s clear workmen are still working on the southbound lanes, and as long as there are active workmen and vehicles present, north or south lanes, the speed limit likely remains an “enforceable” 50mph.

      • I'm wrong - it's 50

I went and checked after guessing and it is clearly marked with signs, at least yesterday, “Work Zone 50 mph.”

        Disregard my previous guess..
