Lots of little changes going on around town, and it is time for us to catalog them. Here are a few to get us started:
– Robert at Zephyr Designs on Main Street is retiring, according to a sign in the window.
– Main Street has some nice, large lit stars on display at night in addition to all the decorated windows. They look to be about 8 or 10 feet across, each.
– There is a new gazebo and other structure (a mini greenhouse, perhaps?) that has been built not farm from the crosswalk at the Retreat.
What have you notice lately?
raking
– The Common has been raked every day by a woman for the last week or so. Leaves are put into small piles and placed around the base of trees. (Hope someone checks on her, actually…)
– New building near the Catholic church (?)
Few more
Jerry Carbone’s Retirement Open House is coming up on the 18th.
Still a lot of geese hanging out in the Retreat Meadows.
That bridge over I-91 is growing bigger and bigger, hanging over Rt 30 as it is connected to the earth again on the side.
78 days to go, and
the first “signs” of Vermont’s presidential primary seen in West Brattleboro. A CARLY sign at the turn onto Western Ave from Bonnyvale, and another on the median on Western Ave by Exit 2.
Remember folks, Vermont’s primary for president is March 1.
Anyone seen any Bernie signs for the primary?
Maker parts and pieces
I stopped in the “new” BRW electronics, formerly Radio Shack, on Putney Road and was amazed by what I saw.
The shelves were fully stocked with interesting and useful things. What really caught my eye was a section of the store completely dedicated to Maker items – computer boards, circuits, robot parts, temperature and moisture gauges, controllers and kits, and so on.
This is what I remember Radio Shack being when I was a kid – a place to go get kits and parts for personal projects. BRW has recaptured that spirit.
Go there and make some tinkering kid (or adult) happy.
Noticed in Brattleboro
FOG ! And lots of it.
Also, no snow.
Snow Monsters Lacking
The lack of snow monsters may be a sign of climate change.
There is animated snow in the iBrattleboro Christmas Calendar. We provide!
Snow Monsters must be made
Every year for the last 5 years, the University of Brattleboro Faculty have been making giant snow heads in the NEYT parking lot, at the Cotton Mill, and other places around town.
I sure hope we get enough snow to do so this winter.
We might have to be on the ball, and rush out after the first storm.
Not seen around Brattleboro
No “star in the East” this year. Usually by Thanksgiving or so there would be a large, lit up star on top of Wantastiquet.
Was it a casualty of the changing communication tower situation?
New lights
Harris Hill Ski Jump is lit up with white lights lining the ski jump ramp.
New ice rink
Folks have cleared a really nice looking oval track shape on the Retreat Meadow for ice skating.
New sign
Black Mountain Inn has a new large sign on Putney Road. Grandfathered in, sorta, it is bigger than signs for fast food and car lots.
Nice design, though.
New windows
Bond Auto Parts on Putney Rd is having their large glass windows re-done to be smaller display windows. Rather significant design change and looks pretty good. Should help save on energy costs, I’d imagine. I see insulation!
Ice huts
Ice huts gone from the Retreat Meadow by March 7.
(a bit post-December, but pre-Spring…)
