The Town of Brattleboro is announcing the resignation of Brattleboro’s Assistant Town Manager, Patrick Moreland, who served in the role since August 2011. Moreland will be stepping down from the position on March 24, 2025, to pursue an opportunity leading DV Fiber as its new executive director.
During his career with the Town, Moreland worked with four town managers and served as interim town manager twice. He’s played a part in numerous initiatives, including routine projects like budget development and special projects such as the transition to municipal EMS services and the launch of the pay-as-you-throw system.
“I oversaw the expansion of curbside organics collection, which is really unique,” Moreland said, adding that the success of the program led to Windham Solid Waste Management District expanding its capacity to receive more organic materials.
Moreland recalled being on the job for less than a full week when Tropical Storm Irene came bearing down on Vermont. He served as a liaison between the municipality and FEMA, and credits the success of the months-long response effort to the leadership and teamwork of the town.
About a decade after Brattleboro was hit with a one-hundred year flood, another once-in-a-lifetime obstacle confronted the community: the pandemic.
“Serving the public during the pandemic was a real challenge,” he said. “But conducting a Representative Town Meeting on Zoom, a platform for which we had no previous experience, and doing so in a manner that protected the integrity of the voting process… that was a challenge.”
Town Manager John Potter is grateful for Moreland’s deep institutional knowledge of town affairs stretching back nearly 15 years.
“Patrick has helped shape numerous conversations when planning for Brattleboro’s future through his thorough understanding of its past,” said Potter. “He’s been an incredible resource for town staff, and we have appreciated his perspective.” Moreland will continue to serve as the Assistant Town Manager through the Selectboard’s busy March schedule, and will take part in his fourteenth and final Representative Town Meeting on March 22.
“I’ve worked with many different Selectboard members and people here in town, and I’ve been impressed, across the board, with everyone’s dedication to the community,” Moreland said. “People care about this town. And part of caring for the community means caring for each other, and that is so important.”

Opportunities
I remember when he was first hired, helping Barb Sondag run the Town. One accomplishment not listed in the PR – that beard. : )
Good new gig for him. He’s got lots of good regional knowledge and contacts that should come in handy for the regional utility.
Taxpayers could save money by not refilling his position for a while.
Seems like a lot of high level Town staff departures in the last year or so. (Asst Town Manager, Fire and Ambulance Chief, Finance Director…). Is this a coincidence or rather a symptom of something?
