I was doing some research for the book I am writing about novelist and newspaper man, T. P. James, who lived in Brattleboro in the 1870s, before moving onward. In the course of my research, I stumbled on this listing of a newspaper called the Headlight in Brattleboro in 1886.
I was very curious to see the county listed for Brattleboro, as Edgecombe County. Then I noticed that I was in the North Carolina portion of the newspaper directory.
:Checking quicjly on Google, I found that the town of Brattleboro, North Carolina, still exists.
There may not be UFO aliens in the universe, but, ladies and gentlemen, we are not alone, and we are not the one and only Brattleboro.

{Updated headline to reflect the additional information revealed in the comments that we are indeed, the only Brattleboro. – ed.}
False advertising?
Wow. That throws the proverbial monkey wrench in the town’s entire promotional gig. I wonder if the town will officially address this at all. Really interesting. One would think a little more research would have been put into the whole “one and only” thing..
Brattleboros "R" us!
All is saved! The town in North Carolina is “Battleboro” without the R.
We can all go back to sleep now.
NOTE TO SELF
Never write or post anything without reading glasses.
Sorry for the false alarm.
Is
reading glasses like reading tea leaves?
Oh, thank goodness. Our
Oh, thank goodness. Our kingdom is safe again and still one of a kind!
Not Quite
Nope…It’s BATTLEBORO, N.C.; http://www.mapquest.com/us/nc/battleboro
FYI
At one time we considered starting a sister site, iBattleboro , for those who like to argue.
If there was a Like button, I'd click on it.
Although actually, it’s the Reformer’s Facebook page that needs a “battle” section… I can’t believe some of the comments posted there!
THE ONE! THE ONLY!... BATTLEBORO :-)
I wonder what the Battleboro Food Coop is like.
Members night is a
Food fight!
So long as it involves eggs tied to heads and paper swords
That’s my kind of food fight.
The BATTLEBORO FOOD co-op
I think that the prices are very low, but the selection of organic food is rather paltry. Here is a picture of it.

Because of the state of their co-op, they don’t get as many visitors from Saturn or Mars as we do. Hardly a UFO at all.

Clearly we need to make Battleboro our sister city
Note that the sister city concept is built on the idea of municipalities from different cultural backgrounds joining together in friendship. We already have other sister cities, but this one would be especially mind opening. I mean Red State / Blue State, we could learn to get along, maybe.

Sister Cities
That is a totally great idea!
Battleboro may be more blue than you think
I have been trying to find information about Battleboro. It appears to have about half the population of Brattleboro, and it went for Obama in 2008. I have not yet found 2012.
And I quote
“The modern concept of town twinning, conceived after the Second World War in 1947,[2] was intended to foster friendship and understanding between different cultures and between former foes as an act of peace and reconciliation,[3][4] and to encourage trade and tourism.[1]”

I’ve sent of an inquiry and will report when I know more.
Historical and Architectural Photos of Battleboro about 75 years

I was especially intrigued by the photos of the annual Braswell Farm Annual Meeting and Dinner.
Here is an explanation of what we are seeing in those photos. Some people own the land. Some rent. There is of course much more to it than that, but, they do refer to the farms as plantations

A very short history of Battleboro

My favorite part of this history was the part where the people got together and built one meeting house that all the denominations shared.
In my experience Reading Glasses are not like Reading Tea Leaves
This was supposed to be in response to “Will Stomp’s” question.
Reading glasses are very useful objects, that prevent aged eyes from blurring together letters.
Reading tea leaves is a not very useful practice.
However I guess in both cases, you get to read what you want to.
