Does anybody know what is going on with the icy roads this morning?
My wife just came back from trying unsuccessfully to get up to Marlboro. She reported that east bound traffic was creeping along with lights flashing and that the road was wall to wall ice. She turned around at the bottom of Starks curve and came back to town. At the State Police barracks she stopped to ask what was going on, but all the doors were locked and the place appeared desserted. I would assume they’re all out dealing with emergencies.
On our street there are a 1 to 2 inches of new ice and the town did come by and scrape at it with their plows a couple times to rough up the surface.
The weather forecast sites I’ve seen are bizarrely mum about the ice. The one linked here on iBrattleboro says it is raining but makes no mention of ice. The weather site I use says it is 55 F which is just plain crazy, and there is an alert shown but it is for heavy rain. Our 2 outdoor thermometers say it’s 31-2 F.
I will be going out to try to get to Guilford Center soon, but will be prepared to turn back if it’s anything like what my wife saw on route 9.
Be careful out there folks!
The ice before the storm
The forecast discussion on the weather page is usually a good place to check, but even they don’t make mention of much ice this morning.
There have been a few accidents on 91 this morning.
It looks like things are warming up in advance of the polar vortex coming our way. So we got rain, which started as ice last night until temperatures started to climb. Temperatures are dropping over in NY and they expect things to be freezing here again later in the day.
Wind chills in the -10 to -30 range are on the way, they say, for Tuesday and Wednesday. Brrr.
Roads
My SO just returned. Steep hill on dirt road was a tiny bit slippery but South Wardsboro Road and Route 30 in Newfane were both clear. Paul – you and I must check temps at the same place; mine currently reports 54 for Newfane while our thermometers indicate 32.
Temperature variants
At 11:25 am here in rural Guilford we read 40 on an outdoor thermometer (which btw is on a screened porch & thus can tend to read high in cold weather) while at the same time ibrattleboro is reporting 33.8 and the NOAA site, which I generally regard as THE SOURCE tells us it’s 54 in Brattleboro!
Nasty Weather
Right in downtown Bratt my outside thermometer is showing 34, and its no fun even walking out there. Deep slush on long stretches of the sidewalks, and its raining hard. I am very much hoping I don’t need to get out and drive in it any today.
and
11:49a on Cedar Street – 37 on one side of the house, 41 on the other.
Temps
Outside thermometer shows 38 now. And because I had it handy, I checked some stuff outside with an infrared thermometer. Plastic surfaces all around 30, metal around 28, wood around 32, open asphalt about 30. All of them changing state more slowly than the air does of course, but still the temperature of the objects around us also does effect us. The roads still being below freezing in some places certainly has an effect.
Changing now
It’s been a rainy slush mix here but it’s just turned from rain to snow. The porch thermometer says 32’F on the dot.
