Vermonters know global warming is happening now, and they are concerned about the impacts of climate change on future generations. Extreme weather events like Irene – which exacted a huge price on people’s lives and their pocketbooks – portend the kind of devastation we can expect from a warming world. Solutions that match the magnitude of the problem – and can turn this challenge into opportunity – are needed now.
There is a growing, diverse coalition – Energy Independent Vermont – working to do just that by calling for putting a price on carbon pollution. A fair, strong, carefully crafted tax on carbon pollution can accomplish three important goals:
Ø Significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are exacerbating climate change.
Ø Grow jobs and Vermont’s economy.
Ø Mitigate the impact to Vermonters on limited budgets – and who cannot afford increasingly high energy burdens.
Want to learn more about this important policy – and opportunity? Please join us for an Educational Forum on Monday, April 27 at 5:30 pm at the Marlboro College Graduate School, 28 Vernon St. in Brattleboro. The evening will include a presentation on the research and work to date to explore such a policy for Vermont. It will also include an overview of a recently commissioned independent economic analysis of the costs and benefits of such a policy, as well as an overview of legislation recently introduced. There will be ample time for Q&A.
This is the beginning of a conversation that will help Vermonters reduce their energy burdens, transition to clean, renewable resources and keep more money in their pockets. Come learn about this effort and shape this important dialogue.
Please RSVP to Paul Cameron at: pcameron@brattleboro.org or (802) 251-8135.
Light refreshments will be served. Sponsored by Brattleboro Climate Protection, the Vermont Natural Resources Council, and Energy Independent Vermont.
