Action Taken: At 6:29pm Central Dispatch received a report of a building fire on Western Ave across from Station 2. A first alarm assignment of Eng 3 & 4 and Ladder 1 responded. Upon arrival of Engine 4 the Officer in Charge reported fire coming from a window on the first-floor west side of the building and a 2nd alarm was struck at 6:32pm. An attack line was stretched by the two firefighters on Engine 4 and they made an attack on the fire. As more help arrived a second attack line was stretched to the 2nd floor, directly over the fire room and a third line stretched to an adjoining apartment to the rear to ensure the fire didn’t spread. The fire was confined to the room of origin, which was a living room on the first floor, front of the building. The tenant where the fire started was not home at the time and all other tenants were evacuated safely. The building is a five-unit apartment building and the downstairs, front apartment where the fire started received extensive damage. All building tenants are being housed by the Red Cross until repairs can be made.
One firefighter was transported to BMH by Rescue Inc for a medical condition, was held for observation and released. There were no civilian injuries.
The origin and cause of the fire is being investigated by members of the Brattleboro Fire Department Investigation Team but at this time appears to be accidental in nature.
