Action Taken/Details:
At 1:59am on 05/14/16 Central Dispatch received a call reporting a building fire on Vernon St near the intersection of Royal Rd. A 1st alarm assignment of Eng 3, Eng 4 and Rescue 2 responded. At 2:01am a police officer arrived in the area and reported it was the abandoned house next to Barrows Oil and that it was fully involved.
At 2:04am Eng 3 arrived on the scene and had a 2nd alarm struck for a working building fire. The building was a 1 ½ story, single family, wood frame dwelling and was fully involved. There was a distance of only 3’ – 5’ between the fire building and the Barrows Oil Truck Depot building so the initial concern was to keep the fire from spreading to that building with the first water being directed at the side of the Barrows Building to cool it. With this done efforts were then turned to extinguishing the fire. The fire was declared under control at 2:42am though fire personnel remained on the scene for several hours searching through the rubble and extinguishing hot spots.
The house was a total loss and the Barrows building received some heat damage to the south end but there was no fire extension. There were no injuries, the cause of the fire is undetermined, and BFD received assistance at the scene from Guilford Fire Department, Brattleboro Police, Rescue Inc, Brattleboro Department of Public Works and Utilities Division and Green Mountain Power. Brattleboro fire stations were covered by Hinsdale, Putney, Guilford and Chesterfield.
