There is a huge fire in one of the Elliot St buildings, near Union Hill. I’m hearing skuttlebutt but so far nothing confirmed except that the fire is more than one floor. By the vid Joe Bushey posted on FB, it looks like most of the back of the building is involved. I hope everyone is safe, pets included.

214 Elliot St.
There’s been a reported robbery at 214 Elliot. Can these people suffer anymore than they have already? Apparently yes. Also this Sunday there have been car break-ins on Elliot St. near 214.
Car break-ins
And there’s been car break-ins on Spring Street, behind Elliot, and in the parking lots there.
Last spring vandals slashed tires there.
What is left to steal in that
What is left to steal in that building? My understanding is that the tenants lost everything in the fire and that nobody has been able to move back in.
This town is becoming more and more depressing to live in. It’s a very different place than it was when I moved here a few years ago. It’s discouraging.
Some parts of town have improved
Our neighborhood seems to me to be a better place than it was 5 years ago.
Recently, I have heard of so many car break ins in many different locations in town.. Personally, I simply don’t keep anything of value in my car, and I never lock it. That way, they can get in without smashing any windows, and there is nothing tempting to steal.
Seems like an easy solution. Desperate people do desperate things. It’s easier to remove the temptation than to try to stop them.
history of stealing in Brattleboro
one of the people who was allegedly doing the stealing has lived in Brattleboro most of his life and has been breaking laws since he was a little boy. I think the town has a mix of law abiding and non law abiding people. I came to Bratt in 1992 and lived at the Abbott building and witnessed & stopped two robberies first hand from my apartment window. I had even witnessed drug deals going on under the street light at night in front of the Muffler shop years ago.
Once pot is legal there might be less crime, but who knows.
Again, I'm wondering what
Again, I’m wondering what there could possibly be to steal in that building? I read in the news today that the owner can’t salvage the building and it will be demolished. I imagine between the flames, the smoke and the water damage there isn’t much there worth taking.
And, to address the rest of your comment: I think the word “allegedly” is an important one to keep in mind when hinting about who may or my not have committed crimes.Unless, of course, you actually witnessed someone stealing property from the Elliot St. house which would be a different situation.
Brattleboro – like any place – big or small- rural or urban -comes with law abiding citizens and those who live by their own rules. I think the various crimes happening in this town are increasing or perhaps just being reported more?
Hard times
If people are hurting bad enough, their honesty goes out of the window.
Pot?
I’m in favor of legalization of pot, but most people don’t have to steal to support a pot habit. Heavier drugs like Heroin and prescription opioids are expensive.
We can learn a lot from Portugal, which liberalized its drug policy in 2000.
