From Facebook:
Dearest friends and customers of Avenue Grocery,
We will be selling the store to new owners on October 1. We have loved being a part of this community and getting to know all of you, having conversations at the counter, sharing soup, listening to live music, making art on grocery bags. We are proud to be part of the long history of neighborhood grocers on Western Avenue, and look forward to watching as the new owners carry on this tradition. As locally-owned businesses struggle to compete with the corporate chain stores, the decisions we all make about where to shop will shape the future of Brattleboro.
The store will be open Tuesday-Friday of this week, and additional days next week if needed. Come by for a chat and a creemee and help us sell out of inventory (there will be deals!)
Thanks for all of your support over the past year and a half!
Warmly,
Katie and Scott
Keeping a useful tradition alive
Thanks, Katie and Scott, for keeping our neighborhood grocery going and passing the tradition on. When we first moved to Cedar Street almost 20 years ago, we were happy to see that there was a “corner market” right down the street. Back then, Dan Cummings ran the store and we got to be friends right away. I was standing in the store with him the morning of 9/11 and we both watched the tv there as the second tower fell. Admittedly, it was kind of a memorable morning.
Later, the store was sold to Jean and her sisters, and we loved visiting with them too. They helped us out a lot over the years, and we are forever grateful. Plus, they put in the soft serve ice cream machine!
Avenue Grocery may be small but it’s important to the people who live nearby (or drive by it on their way to and from work) as a friendly and convenient place to grab a cup of coffee and a paper, or whatever small thing you happen to need. It’s not easy keeping a small independent grocery going these days, but I really appreciate the people who do because it’s a great service.
