The Wilmington Trails Committee is hosting a trail event Saturday, September 27th (Rain date September 28th). The hike will be two of Wilmington’s newer trails: The Shearer Hill Trail and the Raponda Primitive Trail.
Everyone is invited to meet at 10 AM at the entrance to the Shearer Hill Trail, which is at the field on the left hand side of Shearer Hill Road in Wilmington just before you come to the Marlboro Town Line which is at the intersection of Grant Road. You will see vehicles parked along the road. More information about the route will be provided once everyone gathers at the start. The hike will begin at 10:30am.
The route begins on the Shearer Hill Trail which intersects with Molly Stark State Park. From there the hike goes up to the Firetower on top of Hogback and then down the old ski area, crossing Route 9, and continuing to the Raponda Ridge trail and over to West Lake Road where the Primitive Trail descends to downtown Wilmington ending at Wahoos. The Wilmington Trails Committee will provide shuttle service from Wahoos back back to the start of the hike for hikers to get back to their cars. The total mileage for the hike is approximately 9 miles. However, hikers can choose what distance they wish to go. There are plenty of road crossings were hikers can get off if they prefer to do a shorter length such as Route 9 to Hogback, Ware Road and Lake Raponda Road. (Participants will have to post their own cars to get back to the start at Shearer Hill Road should they choose to do one of the shorter hikes. Shuttle service will only be available from Wahoos back to the beginning of the hike
Participants are encouraged to travel in groups, should bring plenty of water, food, lights, warm clothing, and sturdy hiking boots – expect to get somewhat muddy!
