Is it worth getting onto Route 5 south to avoid delays? If yes, how and where do I get on and off route 5?
Should I take Mass Turnpike (90) to 5 south? Get back on 91 at Agawam? Thanks.

We have lived here for 40+
We have lived here for 40+ years and there has always been construction on I-91 Through Springfield. There really is no way around it
Depends a bit on how far
Depends a bit on how far south you plan to go. There are other non-91 routes to NYC, for example, but you may not be heading that way. If you are, you could head over to NY state and go south that way. If the goal is Rhode Island, you can go over RT 2 and down through the middle of Massachusetts.
If the goal is to get to the airport or Hartford, staying on 91 might not be too bad, other than the bumpiness and other crazy drivers.
Not so bad
I drove there recently and it really wasn’t all that bad. Better than early fall actually. Just hang to your left if you can all the way through Springfield and you can avoid most of the bottlenecks and tie-ups.
