Does anyone know if there are town regulations about taking up more than one parking space on a public street? There are 2 public parking spaces directly in front of my house. One of the tenants in my building insists on parking in the middle of the spaces- making it impossible for another person to park in front of or behind her. This is not an occasional occurrence- she does this 24/7 and often does not move her vehicle for days at a time. It makes it impossible when anyone comes to visit and for deliveries of any kind. I get medical transportation to all of my doctor’s appointments and the van has to either pull onto a side street or park in the middle of the street. It’s particularly difficult when I am on crutches – which I currently am. I’ve tried asking her to park in only one space, I’ve talked to the property manager and have left messages at the traffic enforcement office on Flat Street which have gone unanswered. I’m wondering if this is a situation that the police might intervene in? Any thoughts?

Extended Parking
At the very least, she may be in violation of the Brattleboro ordinance on parking time limits. My guess is that spot has either a 2 or a 24 hour limit. Good luck getting that enforced though, it’s a pretty minor violation and might not be high on their priority lit. That’s frustrating for you though, perhaps you could take matters into your own hand and give her some incentive to stop being a selfish jerk.
Are they "lined out public
Are they “lined out public parking spaces”? If not then the tenant probably just pulls up and parks not taking into consideration of any one else’s needs. If they ARE lined out they can get ticketed for double parking. (unless there is a meter and money is deposited in both) Anyway good Luck
They are not "lined" parking
They are not “lined” parking spots but ample space for two vehicles. This is just one action in a very long line of self centered and arrogant actions that this particular person indulges in. Even when asked by several people to please not park that way she continues to do so. She is simply one of those people who don’t feel that any of the rules of common decency and co- existing with others applies to her.
Reaction?
I wonder how she would react if she went out and found all four of her tires flat.
Don't follow that advice
That would be really mean and possibly expensive to do to someone, not to mention illegal. Don’t do it.
Don't worry - I would never
Don’t worry – I would never do that. It’s a situation where I think the only people who would have any impact on her would be if the police stopped by. Someone else on here mentioned that they thought there must be a time limit for someone to park in a public space without moving their car. I know that is true in Massachusetts – unless you notify the local police department that you have a valid reason for not moving your car ( you’re waiting for it to be removed for repairs; you’re going away for a few days; you have a broken leg, etc) your car will be towed if it hasn’t moved in 72 hours. The police actually come around in some places and chalk your tires so they can see if it’s moved or not. This situation is just so incredibly ignorant and uneccessary. I’m going to call the police department tomorrow and see if there are any regulations that are being broken. Today someone put a big piece of cardboard under her windshield wiper saying “ONE CAR = ONE SPACE. STOP BEING AN ASS!”
I appreciate the sentiment although I’m sure it won’t help.
taste of own medicine?
Do you know of anyone who could spare a car for a few days? Wait till her car is gone and park the same way so that when she comes home she doesn’t have the space to use.
Ordinance
From Brattleboro Code of Ordinances, chapter 16, Sec. 16-92…. parking for 12 hours or more continuously on a street within town is prohibited.
Perfect.
Ahhh…thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for.
