  • Found! Phew!

And, I’ve been told it was found.

    Thanks all.

    • Thanks!

      Thank you so much.

Kitty was sleeping somewhere in the house hidden from view. I canvassed the neighborhood and got to meet new people and to find out once again how sweet, kind, and empathetic people can be.

And Chris, thank you for tweeting on our behalf. What a great idea to use Twitter in the search.

  • Kitty "missing" again :-)

Our new family member, eight week old Uncle Mac, disappeared today about the same time as yesterday. Only today I did not canvas the neighborhood putting up posters, we ignored, kept our worrying to a minimum. A couple of hours later — almost at the same time that Uncle Mac reappeared yesterday — there he was. I guess that twice in a row means that Uncle Mac’s afternoon nap in a hidden location can be considered a pattern.

  • Little Houdinis

I have a cat who will disappear for 24 -36 hours at a time . Not every day but a couple of times a month. The first few times I panicked and went out searching; put up fliers, etc. Once I came in to the house after having been searching for 45 minutes (he had been missing more than 24 hours) to see him calmly sitting on the dining room table. I still don’t know where he goes -he disappears and then reappears -no worse for wear- many, many hours later. There is no way for him to get out so he’s found himself a good “vacation” spot in the house.

  • Confused...

Why would you post of your missing kitten before you thoroughly looked around your place? I was following this story and was concerned. Kittens will act like kittens, and cats will act like cats. Obviously when they’re in a new environment, they’ll find strange places to hide out or take shelter in. I’m not in the “inner circle” on this, but, for real?

    • Responding to "Confused..."

It was only the 2nd day since Uncle Mac, our new, eight-week-old kitten, had joined our household. At about 3 p.m. my wife came home and asked if I had seen Uncle Mac. I had not for about an hour.

At first I was not worried, surely he was somewhere in the house: He would come out or we would find him. We went through the house calling him. Until then — during the short time that Uncle Mac had been with us — he always came when we called. This time, nothing, not a peep. We started to look, systematically checking every spot we could think of. I assured my wife that there was nothing to worry about, he is surely in the house and will come out.

Then I considered whether he could have gotten out. It seemed very unlikely, but I could think of ways that this was logically possible. During my sixty-nine plus years on this earth, sadly I have witnessed too many instances when highly unlikely events had tragic results. I decided to act.

It took five minutes or less to create and print out flyers, and then I went out to canvas the neighborhood. I spoke with every person I saw and showed them the photo. An hour later, I thought of ibrattleboro, quickly shot off an mail to Chris, and went back out.

As soon as I realized that there was some realistic possibility that kitty could be wandering outside, I knew that time was of the essence. Little eight-week old Uncle Mac would not be the first kitty hit by a car on Canal Street, and there are dogs in the neighborhood. The quicker I could alert people, the more likely it would be that Uncle Mac would be found. The longer I waited, the further he could have wondered, and the better chance that something awful would happen to him.

I am very grateful to Chris Grotke for posting my appeal quickly, I appreciate the understanding of ibrattleboro readers as well as the kindness of every person in my neighborhood with whom I spoke. And I hope the obvious sarcasm of ecrawf’s “… but, for real!” will not cause anyone ever to hesitate from asking for help.
